A healthy scalp encourages strong hair growth for years. But when your scalp is unhealthy, it can be dry, itchy and bad for the health of your hair. If you find that you're constantly scratching your head or can see white flakes in your hair, you might want to consider that one of the following is the culprit: dehydration, hard water, harsh synthetic chemical shampoos or styling products, cold climate, sun overexposure or diet deficiency.

Achieving true beauty is absolutely a holistic practice, so be sure to consider multiple factors when treating dry scalp. In order to heal your scalp externally, though, you'll need to exfoliate and moisturize. This allows the body's natural regeneration process to restore itself, heal, slough off dead cells, reinforce the acid mantle (the protective layer form by sebum and sweat on the skin surface) and lock in hydration.

This scalp treatment will help you do all that, and it's a cinch to whip up.

Exfoliating & Moisturizing Scalp Treatment

If you don't have all of the ingredients on hand, any one of them alone will work as well. The pineapple contains bromelin enzymes for exfoliation. Buttermilk contains lactic acid for exfoliation and moisture, and probiotic bacteria to help reduce inflammation, hydrate and protect your scalp. The aloe soothes itching and cleanses through its antibacterial properties. Coconut oil is rich in nutrients that will moisturize, soothe and heal the scalp

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup pineapple
  • 1/2 cup organic buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup fresh aloe gel
  • 1/4 cup organic coconut oil

Preparation

Add all ingredients to a blender and mix on low until blended and smooth. Apply the treatment to your scalp and gently massage it. Leave on for 30 minutes (or longer), then rinse well. If you can, wait to shampoo until the next morning so you really give the ingredients a chance to penetrate and do their jobs.

My favorite way to use the mask is to apply it while in a warm bath in the evening: it’s relaxing and makes for easy cleanup!

Remember, healing and prevention is an ongoing lifestyle practice. Use this treatment twice a week for two weeks and you'll see improvement. Be sure to drink water, avoid processed foods, eat lots of fruits and vegetables, exercise, and think and feel positive!
