I may spend days, weeks and months formulating organic skin care for my company, and my goal is always ease-of-use and low-maintenance solutions. Who has time for fancy skin care regimens?

Wherever I am, there's a good chance you'll catch me sipping on a fresh fruit and veggie smoothie. And there's an equally good chance that I used that same recipe to make a restorative face mask for myself before I left the house.

Double duty smoothie/skin mask recipes? Yes, indeed. They’re easy (the blender only needs to be cleaned once!), delicious and the active plant botanicals make these recipes especially effective when applied topically — they'll gently exfoliate the skin on the outside while providing healthy nutrients from the inside.

Orange, Avocado & Carrot Smoothie

This delicious smoothie is packed with beta-carotenes, iron, calcium, potassium, zinc, antioxidants, vitamin C and healthy fats that calm the skin and it moisturized without clogging pores. Perfect of all skin types, the natural acids in the berries help boost cell-turnover as well as protect healthy skin cells. The banana calms breakouts and minimizes redness, while the avocado provides exceptional moisture, even for the driest skin. I recommend using organic ingredients whenever possible.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup orange juice
  • 1/2 fresh, ripe avocado
  • 1/2 cup fresh berries (strawberries, blackberries, blue berries, raspberries or any combination)
  • 1 cup fresh spinach leaves
  • 1/2 fresh or frozen banana, sliced
  • 6 baby carrots or 1 large carrot
  • Ice cubes (optional)

Preparation

Combine orange juice and avocado in a blender. Add the berries, spinach, banana and carrots. Pulse until smooth. Add more orange juice to thin. Set aside 1-2 tablespoons for the face mask. Add a few ice cubes to the blender, if desired and pulse until chopped. Pour into a glass and enjoy!

To apply: With clean fingers, apply the small amount of smoothie to clean skin, gently massaging into the skin but avoiding the eye area. Leave on for 10-15 minutes, then rinse with warm water. Pat dry and follow with an all-natural sunscreen.
