Are you a highly sensitive person? Do you find yourself tuning into people's emotions or being affected by their physical symptoms? Perhaps malls exhaust you or you feel wiped out around too many electronics. If so, your brain and nervous system processes information differently. One of the differences is that you may feel extra-sensitive to energy you pick up from other people and places.
It took me a long time to realize how energetically sensitive I was. Years ago, I moved from the mountains of rural New Hampshire to Los Angeles to collaborate with a team of health experts. I had never lived in Los Angeles before, so I was excited to explore a new area. However, I began to notice that my energy was off.
On a drive from Los Angeles to Carlsbad, California, I noticed that at a certain point in the trip, the energy completely shifted and I felt calmer and more grounded. Fortunately, I knew some experts who could talk to me about what I was experiencing. First and foremost, different places affect people's energy differently, so while my example is about Los Angeles, others may have an entirely different experience.
Here are some of the influences the experts told me could be affecting my energy:
1. Electromagnetic Energy
There are more electromagnetic fields in Los Angeles (which many believe can affect energy in a number of ways).
2. Earth Energy (Geopathic Stress)
The San Andreas Fault (the narrow break between the North America Plate and Pacific Plate) is always moving. It never stops slowly adjusting, and being aware of that can create the sensation of not being on solid ground.
3. Psychic Energy Fields
This relates to other people's energy in a given location. Many experts in energy healing said that whenever they worked with clients in Los Angeles, they experienced a specific type of psychic energy field.
Regardless of the type of energy you pick up, sensitive people's nervous systems and adrenals can get zapped all day long, which can lead to chronic stress and health challenges over time.
Over the years, I've found that these four tips help me thrive:
1. Keep some attention on your inner body.
Everything you consume affects your energy in some way. It can boost or deplete your energy; affect your moods and symptoms; or affect your ability to feel calm, centered, and grounded. If you keep some attention on your inner body, you can notice how your body is responding. Have fun with this — it allows you to develop a really beautiful, loving relationship with your body.
It also helps you become aware that sometimes, you are picking up on something — and having a related symptom — that has nothing to do with you. When you realize you just picked that symptom up from someone or something else, it's easier to allow it to dissolve immediately.
2. Take vitamin B12.
Vitamin B12 helps support brain health, your nervous system, and helps keep you calm in times of stress. If you find that you are depleted when you pick up energy, try a good vitamin B12 supplement. Sublingual methylcobalamin and adenosylcobolamin (the active forms of B12), like Seeking Health Active B12, can be a great option.
3. Take minerals.
Minerals are critical for reducing your stress levels and keeping you calm and grounded. My favorite mineral supplements are ¼ teaspoon sea salt or Himalayan salt in 8 ounces of water (never use table salt!) or a liquid mineral supplement, like Anderson's Sea MD or Aussie Minerals. Minerals are energy spark plugs, and they nourish your adrenals and thyroid.
4. Keep your blood sugar even.
You may find that your blood sugar drops when you experience certain types of energy. Your body is signaling that it needs to be refueled. If you listen and respond with a healthy snack (butter, protein fats, like nut and seed butters, or eggs), your body will be less taxed and feel supported. You can make an easy blood sugar balancer with 1 tablespoon of raw organic butter (or coconut oil), a pinch of cinnamon, a pinch of sea salt, and ½ teaspoon honey. Some people make a little extra and carry it with them throughout the day as a snack for blood sugar stability.
As a highly sensitive person, you may have felt frustrated when your energy is zapped going through your daily life. Now, you can stay grounded, nourished, and supported so you can thrive as the intuitive, creative, sensitive person you are!
