Having Trouble Sleeping? There's A Feng Shui Fix For That

By now, we've all heard about the importance of getting a restorative night's sleep—and probably tried out a few different strategies for catching more zzz's. Maybe you've stopped eating too late in the day, revved up your meditation and self-care routine, or cut off screen time and shut down blue-light-emitting devices a few hours before bed—but what if you're trying all of those and you're still wiped out and groggy in the a.m.?

I'm here to propose that it might be time to shine a spotlight on the feng shui of your bedroom. Hear me out: Sometimes even the most seemingly calm and restful spaces can have some less-than-ideal feng shui flying under the radar. Something as harmless as a plant or a piece of art can be blocking the flow of energy and wrecking your sleep.

When our bedrooms have good feng shui, we feel secure and protected, and only then is our subconscious truly able to relax and shift into a deep rest. Start with these five super-simple fixes and watch your sleep improve (literally) overnight:

1. Take command of your room.

The command position is a foundation of good feng shui in any space: It simply means positioning yourself so that you can be aware of and respond to any activity happening within your space. In your bedroom, this means placing your bed so that you have a view of the door (without being directly in front of it). Ideally, your bed is also not right under a window or backed into a corner. A headboard or wall behind the bed gives a feeling of protection and security, so aim for this too, if space allows. (Got a tiny one-bedroom in the city? No worries! Place your bed as best you can, and try adding a footboard at the end of the bed to further promote feelings of safety and security.)

 2. Find the magic of tidying up.

Can we just pause for a moment and send a massive thank you to Marie Kondo? Decluttering is a super-important part of any calm space—and I'm not talking about just making sure that your laundry makes it off of the floor and into the basket. Piles of clutter not only create physical barriers to free-flowing energy; they also take up mental space. Feng shui operates off the idea that our subconscious is still aware and active while we sleep. So even if your eyes are closed, you may still feel squeezed and chaotic in a cluttered environment. Keep your bedroom free of clutter or piles, keep decorative items to a minimum, resist the urge to use under-the-bed storage, and keep trash cans out of the bedroom entirely.

 3. Give your space some art direction.

Now is the time to be your own toughest editor! Look at every photo, painting, or image displayed in your bedroom and think about what it represents on a deeper level. Photos of the in-laws should be the first to go! Display them beautifully in your main living area if you like, but just like actual in-laws, they have no place in your bedroom. Or, if you're single, you may love that vacation photo of you solo in the Sahara Desert, but is it symbolically calling in the energy of a healthy relationship?

Keep images in the bedroom that promote calm, love, and partnership. Colors should be on the quieter side, and placements are best kept to the sides of the bed, instead of directly opposite it. Lastly, position any mirrors so that they aren't reflecting the bed, or even better, move them to another room.

4. Keep your space clear—physically and energetically.

Once you've removed clutter, positioned furniture, and edited technology and art, treat yourself to an energetic cleaning. Open the windows, use your favorite sage spray, incense, or smudge, and begin to help any stale or old energy move along. Pay special attention to corners of your room, or areas behind dressers, cabinets, and doors.

Consciously invite in new fresh energy as you make your way around the room, and set your intention that your newly designed bedroom will bring you calm and uninterrupted sleep. If sage isn't your thing, try clearing energy with sound. Sound vibrations are—you guessed it—high vibrations of energy, so grab your favorite instrument, bell, or playlist and make it LOUD. Finally, close the windows, light a candle or use your favorite essential oil and diffuser, and settle in for some serious dream time.

 5. Declutter yourself before bed. 

One of my simplest but most powerful feng shui tips is to declutter yourself before sleep using meditation. At its heart, feng shui is energy work, and optimizing it means releasing and removing clutter and blocks. If you've ever tried to get a good night's sleep without fully decompressing from a particularly stressful day (and who hasn't?), you already have an idea of the importance of a clear space for both body and mind. Making meditation a part of your nighttime ritual can help you not only to put the day's events into perspective but to program the brain to relax and release too.

I like to do a visualization meditation, where I imagine the incidents and conversations of the day being lifted up and carried away until they're far out of view. For an extra dose of relaxation, I'll add a frequency soundtrack (you can find these on YouTube, Spotify, or my favorite playlist here) depending on the needs of the day. Some of my favorites are 396 hertz for releasing anxiety, 528 hertz for releasing conflict and inner dialogue, and 639 hertz for harmonizing energy and raising vibrations. If you're new to meditation, I totally recommend downloading an app and starting small, with as little as five minutes to begin with.
