THIS Is How Often You Should Really Wash Your Hair

At one time or another we've all heard that shampooing every day is "not good for your hair." It's absolutely true and it's also totally not true. I'll explain; it can be damaging to wash hair frequently when shampoo is full of harsh, synthetic chemicals and detergents.

Wash, rinse, repeat?

Conventional shampoos remove critical natural oils from the hair and scalp then coat it with silicones that build up on the hair. The same silicones are also found in conditioners where you will find synthetic emulsifiers, thickeners, penetration enhancers, and artificial fragrance that can leave nasty chemical residues. These all rob the hair and scalp of its innate, regenerating process by overcleaning, which throws off the pH balance. The result? The hair and scalp are left extra vulnerable.

Assess your hair type.

I noticed when my clients' hair and scalp was shampooed daily, the scalp became dry, flaky, unbalanced, or the hair turned limp and lackluster. Instructing clients to limit washing to once or twice a week helped restore the balance to the scalp and hair, naturally. This is where the instruction "washing your hair every day is bad," came from. Each person's experience is unique depending on how much the individual scalp and hair can withstand before its natural, regenerating process becomes impaired.

Plant oils mimic the body.

Everyone's skin, scalp, and hair balance is contingent upon many things but I have discovered that by switching clients from man-made chemical shampoos to completely pure, natural, and organic hair care, the results can be dramatic. The pure and natural shampoo formulas are gentle and work in alignment with the biochemistry of the body. Natural, unaltered plant oils mimic the oils of the body creating a "bio-match" that supports and accelerates the healing process.

Stay away from dry shampoo.

These natural cleansing agents have a kind of intelligence where they don't over clean and remove protective natural oils that maintain the proper moisture level and pH on the hair and scalp. Gentle, bioactive cleansing combined with nourishing herbal active synergy in shampoos and conditioners also work as a treatment to stimulate the cells in the follicle. Increased circulation in the scalp and follicle is a very important part of creating and maintaining healthy hair. Truly healthy hair starts in the follicle. When the follicle is stimulated with specific herbs, the increased blood circulation feeds the hair bulb and therein nourishes the cells creating the hair shaft. Beautiful, strong hair starts in the scalp follicle.

  1. I recommend people wash their hair as often as every day or at least every other day and continue to see incredible results. This regular cleansing cycle is guaranteed to remove excess oil, dirt, and pollution from the hair and scalp.
  2. Dry shampoos don't allow the scalp and follicle to breathe and function properly. As convenient as they are, dry shampoos just disguise and add to the dirt and pollution. If you're in a rush, try a mix of ¼ cup arrowroot powder or organic cornstarch with five drops of an essential oil of choice, then use an old makeup brush to apply to your roots.
  3. Shampooing every day is great for your scalp and hair when approached with the right products and philosophy. Get creative with this DIY baking soda shampoo and dab a little oil on your strands when they're dry. This will allow the oil to absorb, strengthen, protect, and moisturize your hair before you shampoo or go swimming. Applying oil to damp hair can help as well, sealing in micro amounts of moisture. Use a small amount of camelina, coconut, jojoba, grapeseed, or sunflower.
