Most people will have heard of feng shui, however they might not know too much about it. There is much more too it than the simple and generally held understanding that it is about arranging furniture in a certain way. For this reason, it is important to highlight ten things you didn't know about feng shui.
1. It Is Not A Modern Fad
Some people dismiss feng shui as being a modern fad, however nothing could be farther from the truth. It has, in fact, been practised for over three thousand years, and originated in ancient China. The fact that it is still being used today shows what a durable philosophy it is.
2. It Is Based On The Scientific Principle Of Energy
The ancient Chinese understood that energy is a constant force in the universe, and surrounds us in everything that we interact with. Feng shui was developed as a means to harness that energy in the best possible way to ensure only a positive outcome.
3. There Are Five Natural Elements
The five elements in feng shui are water, wood, fire, earth, and metal. A feng shui practitioner will incorporate these elements into a work or living space. They must be used together in the correct way to ensure that the energy of the area is in balance.
4. Colors Are Also Important
When it is impractical to incorporate the elements themselves into a space they can be represented by colors instead. For example, a wall painted red can invoke the qualities of the fire element. As with the elements, colors must not clash, but should instead complement each other.
5. The Bagua Map Is an Important Feng Shui Tool
The Bagua map is useful when attempting to apply the principles of feng shui, but it must be used correctly. A precise compass reading must be taken of a building in order to establish the sitting and facing positions and the positive and negative energy fields. From here steps can be taken to implement the five elements.
6. It's Not Just About The Positioning Of Furniture
Where furniture is placed in a room is important in feng shui, as spaces should be uncluttered and have ease of access. However, what is equally important is the material which the furniture is made from, and its color. As has previously been stated, there can be conflicts in the energies of elements and colors within a space, and this must be taken into account.
7. Some Spaces Are More Important Than Others
Feng Shui attempts to manipulate and control the design of spaces to ensure that the energy within those spaces is always positive. This energy can have a real effect on the people living or working within a particular area, and can leave them feeling positive, healthy, and creative, or depressed and demotivated. For this reason the spaces which people spend the most time in, such as living rooms, bedrooms, and offices, are most important in feng shui.
8. Much Of What You Have Heard About Feng Shui Is Wrong
The principles of feng shui are often misunderstood, and as such much of what is written is often wrong. For example, some people state that a front door of a building should always face East. This is obviously impossible in many cases. The energy fields in each individual building have to be considered in order to determine the best position for its features.
9. The Entrance to a Property Is Very Important
In the example given above the door facing East is not as important as the fact that it is in a positive energy field. A main entrance to a property is important in feng shui as it is where the positive energy enters the building. It should be well maintained and inviting, and the door should be in proportion to the house and of a harmonious color.
10. Feng Shui Is More Relevant Than Ever
Increasing numbers of new homes are being built to environmentally friendly standards. This works perfectly with the principles of feng shui, which utilize the powers of nature, and especially the sun, to make a house a positive living space. As such, feng shui can be used in the construction of homes to ensure maximum positivity.
