Throw These 7 Things In Your Beach Bag For Your Most Sustainable Summer Ever
After long last, summer is (sorta, kinda) here again. To ring in Memorial Day weekend, we hand-picked some seasonal essentials that strike the right balance of practical, stylish, and easy on the planet. Throw them in your beach bag (may we suggest this one made from recycled boat sails or this one that's designed to last forever?), top them off with an addicting beach read, and fancy yourself summer-ready.
1. A suit made from recycled materials.
The year 2019 will go down in history as the year of the sustainable swimsuit: Leading up to this summer, major brands like Athleta and Reformation have released swimwear that incorporates recycled material. In Athleta's case, its suits are made from recycled nylon and ladder up to the companywide goal to use more sustainable fibers by 2020. Reformation's suits are also made from nylon waste collected from things like fishing nets and industrial plastic that have been collected from landfills and oceans. Some other notable brands making a dent in pollution include Indigo Swimwear, made using nylon waste, and Fair Harbor, made from recycled plastic bottles.

2. A towel that gives back.
A sizable amount of proceeds (10 percent!) from Sand Cloud's towels give back to marine conservation organizations such as Surfrider Foundation and Pacific Marine Mammal Center. The towel itself is a blend of recycled cotton, recycled polyester, and virgin cotton. It's lightweight and would be a great base for your next picnic in the park, too.

3. Sunnies that promote a brighter future.
Nothing shady about these: Norton Point has developed what it claims to be the first line of eyewear made from ocean plastics, recovered from the beaches of Haiti. For every pair sold, the company gives back 5% of profits to global cleanup initiatives. Also notable in sustainable eyewear are Costa's "untangle our oceans" collection made from discarded fishing nets and Just Human's unisex shades that sit in a Piñatex, a leather alternative made from pineapple leaf fibers, case.

4. A cozy cover-up.
Neu Nomads' breezy kaftan is made using nontoxic dyes in a sustainable facility that runs on solar power and recycles up to 90% of its water waste. More of a T-shirt beachgoer? This basic organic cotton tee from Native Color is made entirely from natural materials and planet-friendly dyes.

5. Sunscreen that won't harm the ocean.
On the hunt for reef-safe sunscreen that isn't impossible to apply? Raw Elements organic sunscreen doesn't require much extra rubbing in and is made without environmentally damaging oxybenzone. Bonus: It's packaged in a plastic-free tin.
Raw Elements Face + Body Tin ($17.49)
6. Flip-flops that tread lightly.
Third Oak shoes put an earth-friendly spin on the classes synthetic rubber flip-flop. They're made using natural materials like soy and recycled plastic, so you can actually toss them in the recycling bin once you've worn them out.
Third Oak Scout Black Women's Flip-Flop ($30)
7. A reusable bottle.
Don't forget to pack a reusable bottle so you're not tempted by the plastic ones at the snack bar. These days, there are tons of mission-driven bottle brands, but these days we're crushing on the Welly Bottle, which gives proceeds to Charity: Water.
