Most recently, Meghan Markle is known for being the fiancée of Prince Harry of the British royal family. But before that, the Los Angeles native starred as the super-empowered Rachel Zane on the legal drama Suits, and she has a long history of humanitarianism. It's no secret that Markle's life is demanding, and with a royal wedding in the works, it's about to get a lot crazier.
Here's how Markle stays grounded, energized, and fit amid the chaos of a royal engagement:
1. She treats running as a meditation.
While Markle knows running is good for her body, she does it just as much for her mental health as she does for her overall fitness level. “I love running, but I think you need to find a workout routine that goes beyond your body," she said an an interview with Shape. "For me, I need running as much for my head as I need it for keeping in shape. I do a lot of hot yoga and Pilates.”
In another interview, she admitted running was her meditation of choice. "Running has always been my form of moving meditation, which I relish because it allows me to get out of my head," she said.
2. Her go-to energy boost is a green juice or kombucha.
When she hits that 3 p.m. slump, Markle doesn't go for a cup of coffee. Instead, she reaches for a green juice or kombucha. "Going for coffee or things like that only ends up hurting you in the end, so I go for a natural source of energy like a green juice or even a kombucha. Something that gets right into your system," she said.
3. She believes in the power of giving.
Markle has long been an advocate for women, and she believes giving back is in her DNA. "Both my parents came from little, so they made a choice to give a lot—buying turkeys for homeless shelters at Thanksgiving, delivering meals to patients in hospice care, donating any spare change in their pocket to those asking for it, and performing quiet acts of grace—be it a hug, a smile, or a pat on the back to show ones in need that they would be all right," she wrote on her lifestyle website The Tig. "This is what I grew up seeing, so that is what I grew up being: a young adult with a social consciousness to do what I could, and to, at the very least, speak up when I knew something was wrong."
4. She has a long history with yoga.
Markle regularly practices hot yoga and vinyasa, and she's been doing so from a young age—her mom was a yoga instructor. "That practice is in my blood," she said. "I love an intense vinyasa class, and even better if it's blasting hip-hop and done in a dark room with candlelight. The best!"
Additionally, she believes in the power of yoga for reduced anxiety and better sleep. "There are so many benefits that come with the practice of yoga," she told Best Health. "Increased flexibility and muscle strength, greater happiness, increased mental focus, a greater ability to relax, decreased anxiety, and better sleep."
5. She eats clean for the most part, but she's not above indulging on the weekends.
Markle keeps her energy up by sticking with vegetables, protein, and healthy fats like fish during the week. But on the weekends, everything is fair game. "I try to avoid the things that I know will make me feel lethargic or sluggish," she says. "I mostly eat fish and veggies, but I’m also a foodie. On the weekends all bets are off—I think if you deprive yourself of anything, you’re just going to crave it more. So for me it’s finding that balance. I love burgers and fries—I definitely love good Italian food and Mexican food."
6. She swears by short, effective workouts.
Markle is busier than ever, but she still finds time to fit workouts in, even if it's just in 15-minute bursts. "I’ve been doing the Tracy Anderson DVDs for five, maybe six, years now. I find the results are really great. I just find those little bits of time that help."
