As a wellness editor, I've spent years writing about gut health. I've interviewed gastroenterologists, covered countless microbiome studies, and written more stories about the digestive tract than I ever imagined I would. All of this reporting and researching has made it clear to me just how much our digestive system can reveal about overall well-being, from skin and mood to metabolic function.

But what is less clear is how to interpret that information. I have a vague idea of what my overall digestive health is like, but not much more to go off of than generalizations and memory. I’ve spent years preaching the importance of gut health, but when it came to my own I was completely in the dark.

So when I heard about Kohler Health's Dekoda—a first-of-its-kind bathroom device designed to passively monitor hydration, digestive patterns, and long-term bathroom trends—I wanted to see if it could help me find the information I was looking for.

Kohler Health

Dekoda

A first-of-its-kind tracking tool designed to fit discreetly in the toilet where it passively captures information on your bathroom habits, helping you track patterns in hydration and digestive health.

Why your bathroom habits deserve more attention

Digestive patterns can reflect hydration status, dietary habits, stress levels, illness, and even how your overall routine is impacting your body. In fact, I recently reported on all the ways your gut health and systemic health are connected

Even a brief synopsis of the research can make its importance pretty clear: Your gastrointestinal tract is home to trillions of microbes that influence digestion, immune function, nutrient absorption, metabolism, and even the way your brain communicates with the rest of your body.

Because so many systems converge in the gut, it plays a foundational role in whole-body health. From energy and blood sugar regulation to mood and resilience, digestive health influences how we function every day. That's why experts view the gut as one of the best places to start when building long-term health.

Unfortunately, so many of us know very, very little about what’s happening with our digestive health. I also recently reported on a surprising statistic: only 6% of Americans track their bathroom habits, despite the fact that most adults experience digestive upset at least once a week

And despite knowing better, I was one of the 94% of Americans who wasn’t paying any attention to what was happening in the bathroom. Until now.

Why I wanted to try Kohler Health’s Dekoda tracker

Kohler Health

Dekoda

A first-of-its-kind tracking tool designed to fit discreetly in the toilet where it passively captures information on your bathroom habits, helping you track patterns in hydration and digestive health.

For full disclosure, I am not the tracking type. I don’t wear any of the rings, wristbands, or other gadgets that monitor your every move and heartbeat. I can understand the value in them, and have even tested a few, but I’ve not really stuck with it.

But because I know just how impactful digestive health is for your overall well-being, it seemed like if I was ever going to start tracking something, it was an obvious place to start.

And now it's actually possible. Kohler Health's Dekoda is unlike any tracker you’ve heard of before. It attaches to your toilet and collects information about hydration status, bowel movement frequency and consistency, and the presence of blood. Those insights are then delivered to the Kohler Health App, where you can view long-term trends and establish a personal baseline over time.

It aims to take the guesswork out of those everyday health signals by tracking them automatically in the background. So instead of relying on memory or manual tracking, Dekoda turns a routine you already do every day into objective health information you can actually use—and, if needed, share with your healthcare provider.

But I've tested plenty of wellness technology over the years. Some devices are genuinely helpful. Others end up forgotten in a drawer after a few weeks because they require too much effort.

For me, the biggest question wasn't whether Dekoda could collect useful information (I’d seen the data, read all about its technology, and understood the science). It was whether I'd actually continue using it.

The products that become part of your life aren't usually the ones with the longest feature list. They're the ones that disappear into your routine.

Dekoda immediately stood out because it doesn't ask you to do much differently. It attaches to your existing toilet without replacing it, works passively in the background, and pairs with a companion app that organizes your information into understandable trends.

Testing out the Dekoda

I got the Dekoda about 6 weeks ago, and here’s been my experience, from when I unboxed it to right now as I’m writing this review.

Straightforward setup

I am not a procrastinator by nature, except in one area: Setting up technology of any kind. I am still using an iPhone 11 from 2019 because I can’t bring myself to go through the steps of switching everything over. So when I received my Dekoda, it sat in its box for a few days while I avoided setting it up.

Well, you know when you avoid a simple task for far too long, only to realize it takes you almost no effort at all? That was me setting up my Dekoda

The device is cleanly organized in its package and comes with a simple, concise booklet that identifies all the parts for you. Within the booklet, there’s a QR code which will launch the step-by-step instructions.

I didn’t time how long it took me, but I’d be shocked if it was more than a few minutes.

Easy-to-use

After setup, you can start using it right away. There are two options to record a visit: Either via the remote that’s protected by fingerprint login or through your app.

Once I got into the (very easy) habit of starting the session, the information accumulated naturally over time. I found myself paying less attention to the tracking process itself and more attention to the patterns that began emerging on the app. Speaking of…

Informative & actionable

One of the things I appreciated most was the emphasis on trends instead of isolated measurements. Health isn't determined by one day's hydration or one unusual bathroom visit. It's the bigger picture that matters. Viewing information over time made it much easier to recognize patterns I probably would've overlooked otherwise.

Instead of asking myself, "Was I drinking enough water this week?" I could see whether my hydration appeared consistent. Instead of relying on vague memories about digestion, I had a clearer understanding of how my routine changed over time or I was better able to understand how my body responded to day-to-day triggers.

And I was able to do that thanks to the Kohler Health App. It’s not overly clinical or overwhelming. It just organizes information into trends that are easy to review. Instead of staring at endless numbers, I felt like I was getting a clearer picture of what’s going inside my body.

Private & secure data

Any product that collects health information should take privacy seriously.

Because Dekoda is used in such a personal space, I appreciated that Kohler Health has clearly considered privacy throughout the experience. The company outlines how information is collected, stored, and managed while giving users control over their own data.

That level of transparency helped make me feel more comfortable incorporating the technology into my daily routine.

Family-friendly

Many health trackers are designed around one individual. One person can wear them at a time, after all. Bathrooms, however, are naturally shared spaces. My family lives in a one-bathroom apartment, which means the Dekoda was always going to be used on our primary toilet (no where else for it to go!). And while I originally signed up for an individual membership, the family membership option means the technology has the potential to support everyone in the home.

For up to 6 individuals within the home, each family member who wants to use it gets their own individual account, app, and has control over the tracking. If the family is using the remote to log visits, each person can use their finger-print to sign in effortlessly. That means information is kept private and not shared with other family members—even if you’re using the same bathroom.

The verdict: Worth it

As a wellness editor, especially one who cares about preventative well-being, I've spent years encouraging readers to pay attention to the signals their bodies are sending them. This experience reminded me that it's often much easier to notice those signals when you can actually see the data.

Dekoda appealed to me because it asks almost nothing from the user while providing a perspective that's genuinely difficult to get otherwise. Rather than turning health tracking into another chore, Dekoda fits into a routine that's already happening every day. After years of testing wellness technology, I have found that the best innovations are those that don’t demand your attention. It simply helps you understand yourself a little better.

Dekoda does exactly that.
