Try This: The Art of Gratitude Journaling

Human interaction is becoming more and more virtual – which means awareness in the present moment is also more rare than before. The good news is: we can proactively change this – if we act consciously.

A simple way to begin: Start a gratitude journal.

A gratitude journal (from here on out: GJ) is a precious notebook that you may write in on a daily to weekly basis about the beauty of your life. On a “bad” day, it may just be that you have a roof over your head and loving family members. On a super day, perhaps you nailed a performance, got a raise or met the president. On an average day, well, whatever your heart desires.

Why bother with a gratitude journal?

My GJ helps me put my life in perspective. Instead of focusing solely on what tomorrow will bring, it helps me appreciate what I have. It helps me stay grateful and happy for my life as it is. Not as what I want it to be, or as it will be, but in the present. It helps me live in the present, which is a difficult thing to do in this day and age.

Happiness comes with GJ-ing because happy people appreciate the present, unhappy people live forever unsatisfied as they always focus on what they have not achieved or obtained.

How to start?

Find a gorgeous notebook, or make it your own with drawings, pictures or decorations. Take 5 minutes before bed once a week or daily to GJ your life. You’ll be surprised how much you are already blessed with. So, smile, love, laugh: life’s too short not to!

I hope this inspires you to create your own GJ. As the French proverb goes: “Gratitude is the heart’s memory.” (La reconnaissance est la memoire du coeur.)
