Waking in the middle of the night to realize my chest was slick with sweat had become a regular occurrence as of late. I recently increased the dose of my anti-depressant, and one of the common side effects I was experiencing was night sweats. Not only was it increasing my laundry days, but it was also impacting my quality of sleep.

A wellness-minded friend recommended I try a cooling mattress to aid in temperature control, but I was skeptical. Could a cooling cover do that much?f But then I was offered to chance to try

Molecule’s Reflex Hybrid Mattress—and I realized I could finally put her suggestion to the test.

Turns out, switching my old bed for a new model that promotes temperature regulation has been a key factor in getting my sleep back on track. And the fact that it’s incredibly comfortable and feels luxurious is just a bonus.

What is the Molecule Reflex?

Molecule’s Reflex is a recovery focused mattress focused on keeping the body aligned and cool throughout the night—both essential to quality sleep. The brand achieves this standout support with their proprietary LIFTCOR® BODY BOOST foam layer. The buoyant foam is infused with two sections of gel bands, which gently lift the heaviest part of your body (your shoulders and hips) to promote proper spinal alignment

Despite the added support, the mattress maintains breathability. This comes down to a combination of a cooling cover, deep air channels, and Air-Engineered™ foam (another Molecule exclusive). Made in the U.S., the open-cell foam allows for ample airflow, keeping the CertiPUR-US®-certified foam temperature regulated.

The Reflex lineup includes both all-foam and hybrid mattresses, from the 11-inch Reflex to the 12-inch Reflex Pro and 14-inch Reflex Elite. The hybrid models combine foam comfort layers with individually wrapped coils, while the all-foam versions rely on layers of supportive foam.

Depending on the model, shoppers can choose from different firmness options to find a feel that suits their sleep position and comfort preferences.

Why I went with Molecule’s hybrid model

The Molecule Reflex Elite Hybrid 14 mattress is the collection's 14-inch hybrid option, designed to pair a plush, cushioned feel with responsive support and a multilayer cooling system. It combines several proprietary foam technologies with an individually wrapped coil system to help distribute weight, promote airflow, and support spinal alignment.

The mattress features eight distinct layers, each serving a specific purpose:

  • Cool-touch cover: Cooling polyethylene fibers are designed to create a refreshing surface when you first get into bed.
  • AirTEC™ PRO cooling foam: Open-cell foam infused with phase-change material is designed to promote airflow and help manage heat.
  • RestorePRO™ Luxe Foam: This pressure-relieving memory foam layer gently contours to the body for added cushioning.
  • CoolVENT™ airflow foam: Another open-cell foam layer helps promote breathability while providing responsive support.
  • LIFTCOR® PLUS zoned gel support: Gel bands beneath the body's core are designed to provide targeted lift and help prevent the midsection from sinking too deeply.
  • MOLECULE Edge™ coil system: Individually wrapped coils provide responsive support and help promote spinal alignment.
  • Lift360™ MAX edge support: A reinforced foam perimeter helps create a more stable surface across the mattress, including along the edges.
  • CONTOURFLO™ base foam: The supportive foundation helps maintain mattress stability while promoting airflow.

The Reflex Elite Hybrid 14 is available in plush and firm options, so you can choose the right amount of support for your sleeping style. Ultimately, I went for the plush option as someone who switches between sleep positions throughout the night.

Regardless of firmness preferences, the mattress’ combination of cooling materials, contouring foam, and responsive coils is perfect for anyone who wants cushioning without sacrificing support.

Unlike an all-foam mattress, the Reflex Elite Hybrid 14 combines cushioning foam layers with individually wrapped coils for a more responsive feel. I was drawn to this design because I tend to toss and turn throughout the night and wanted a mattress that could support my body without making it difficult to change positions.

Unboxing Molecule’s Reflex Hybrid

Molecule’s Reflex Elite Hybrid comes rolled in a box that seems far too small to contain an 14-inch mattress. Yet when I opened the box my queen mattress arrived in and removed the vacuum sealed plastic, the bed unfurled without effort.

The mattress immediately started puffing up to reveal its true shape. And no, the bed-in-a-box did not give off a chemical odor during this process. In a matter of minutes, I was plopping the mattress down on my bed frame, ready to dress it in my favorite sheets.

Molecule recommends allowing up to 48 hours for the mattress to fully expand. If you're setting up a new mattress, it's worth factoring that time into your plans, even if it looks ready to use sooner.

The first night I slept in the bed, I was immediately pleased with its soft and plush yet supportive feel. That’s likely the firm foam perimeter, responsive coils, and pressure point-reducing “body boost” layer at work. Most impressively, the surface actually seemed cool to the touch even beneath my sheets.

Molecule advertises airflow promoting foam and a refreshing cover, but I wasn’t expecting to feel such a difference in the material compared to any other mattress. I’m happy to report it blew past my initial expectations.

How I tested the Reflex Hybrid

I slept on the Molecule Reflex Hybrid mattress for about a month before sitting down to write this review. I’ve kept track of the number of night sweat-induced sleep interruptions I’ve endured. I’ve paid careful attention to my energy levels, including my desire to slip into an afternoon nap or skip my regular evening workout.

During testing, I focused on a few key factors:

  • Temperature regulation: Whether the mattress felt cool when I got into bed and how comfortable I felt throughout the night.
  • Comfort and pressure relief: Whether the surface felt cushioned without allowing me to sink too deeply.
  • Support: How well the mattress supported my back, hips, and legs in different sleeping positions.
  • Responsiveness: How easily I could change positions and whether the mattress made any noticeable noise as I moved.
  • Overall rest: Whether I noticed changes in nighttime interruptions and how rested I felt the following morning.

After sleeping on the mattress for weeks, I noticed a positive change in my sleep. I was waking up less often feeling overheated, and I felt better rested in the morning. The air-flow promoting materials seem to help my body temperature stay regulated throughout the night, leading to fewer sweaty wake-ups.

The innerspring system holds my back, hips, and legs just right, whether I’m falling asleep flat on my back, switching to my sides, or waking on my belly. I tend to toss and turn during the night, and the responsive materials support me every which way I move without making a sound. No squeaks or creaks here.
