Q&A

What is your wellness philosophy?

Follow how you feel first and foremost. Feng shui, my most personal example, has a lot of schools and rules, and I don't believe they apply universally. If you're doing things because you "should" and they feel wrong, confusing, or overwhelming to keep up with, that's not wellness or feng shui to me. Designing a life that feels great, a home that feels great, doing what feels great; this is it.

What brought you into wellness?

Since I was about 11, I was loaded up with books about how to optimize life: from wild diets and food combining to crystals and healers. I'd listen to lectures about visualization and energy with my father. My mom did yoga and had metaphysical friends. All these ideas were (at the time) crazy to most of the people around me in New Jersey but I loved them, even if they were in the "weird" background of my life. When I got very sick 12 years ago and found myself in a hospital for weeks, I was sent home to recover and realized my home didn't feel like a home and my life was in a sort of rock-bottom beyond chaos. I looked up Feng Shui and signed on to a certification program (I had a lot of time on my hands!) to learn how my home could help me to put my life back together. It worked, way better than I could have ever imagined and, somewhat accidentally, it quickly became a huge part of my life. A lot of those early ideas and practices I learned as a kid were a part of how I was working with feng shui in homes. So many people appeared shortly after that who have become dear friends and family in the world of wellness. I was a proof of that Joseph Campbell quote, "Follow your bliss and the universe will open doors where there were only walls."

What does You. We. All. mean to you?

Everything. I come from a small town where it felt like everyone knew and helped each other, and I keep that close to me. I don't do well with cliques and exclusion and narcissism. Everyone is equally valuable. Happiness and wellness are meant to be for everyone.

What's your favorite ritual?

Salt baths. A pound of sea salt or a few cups of Epsom salt in a bath with or without a book. I add a cup of baking soda (for me it's super-energizing and glow-getting) when I feel like I need it.
