Zac Efron Swears This Diet Totally Changed His Life

Over the years, Zac Efron has taken on some pretty extreme diets to adapt to different roles. He's cut out carbs for two months to trim down for Baywatch, consumed six meals a day for Neighbors, and experimented with every protein shake under the sun. But now, the 30-year-old actor is on the hunt for an eating and self-care routine that will sustain him in the long run.

"I want to be able to do what I’m capable of now when I’m 50, 60, 70 years old... Just like everyone else, I wake up, look in the mirror, and I see the imperfections and the bags under my eyes, and think, 'Oh, man, is this really the best I've ever looked? I'm getting older?' Recently what I've started doing is searching for the cure inside that's causing the symptoms of what I'm getting on the outside," he tells Teen Vogue of his perspective on health.

As for the diet that's helping him feel youthful and energized? No surprise here; it's plant-based. "I've been experimenting with eating purely vegan. That's completely changed the way that my body works, and the way that I metabolize food, the way it turns into energy, the way that I sleep. It's been brilliant. It’s been great for my exercise and great for my routine."

As evidenced by plant-based endurance athletes like mindbodygreen collective member Rich Roll, a vegan diet can fuel even the most extreme of workouts, so it's no wonder that Efron is adding it to his holistic health regimen.
