Savannah Guthrie Did The Keto Diet & The Results Surprised Her
The ketogenic diet is one high in fats, moderate in protein consumption, and its staple—low in carbs. Typical keto diets restrict carbohydrates to less than 50 grams a day, which is a significant change for most people. So why the appeal? The goal is to lower blood sugar, which in turn reduces the release of insulin, a hormone that collects fat. The body shifts from burning glucose for fuel to fat. Is it as easy as that? Well, maybe, but everyone's body reacts differently to changes in diet.
Savannah Guthrie, a Today show anchor, started on the keto diet, most recently calling it a "summer experiment" on Dr. Oz's show. Although it is popularized as a weight-loss diet, Guthrie did not go in with the plan of losing significant weight, instead hoping it would help with the few extra pounds from overeating. Although you do have to restrict carb intake, Guthrie told Dr. Oz, she enjoys incorporating more fat like cheese and bacon, into her meals, both things she never ate much of before. There were also some unexpected surprises—a sharper mind but less energy to exercise. It sounds like mostly a success as she still loosely follows the diet.
If you're considering starting the keto diet, it's important to know the ins and outs of what you're getting into. A great place to get started is a Q&A with gut health specialist Vincent M. Pedre, M.D., for answers to: "What foods should I avoid on the keto diet?" and "What are the pros and cons?" When you're ready to enter ketosis, there are a bunch of simple recipes you can begin with, from green tea and MCT oil to keto macadamia bread. Whether you are still researching the diet or making the leap, it's important to remember your body will go through a transition phase, and what matters is that you listen to what your body is telling you.
Dr. Oz pro tip: Have someone smell your breath if you think you're in ketosis—bad breath means you're in the zone.
