These Factors Make You More Likely To Cheat, According To New Science

A study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology has fascinating new findings on the factors that make people more likely to cheat. The study looked at over 100 newlywed couples and found that one major factor had to do with disengagement: The more quickly a person looks away from an attractive person, the less likely they are to engage in infidelity.

The study found a few other interesting factors that could influence likelihood of cheating as well. These included being younger, having a history of short-term sexual partners, and, perhaps most surprisingly, having a satisfying sex life. Researchers think this is because if you have a positive association with sex, you're more likely to seek it out.

This isn't the first batch of research that's been conducted on factors that make people more likely to cheat. Previous studies have found that men with a high face width-to-height ratio are more likely to cheat, and people with the "thrill-seeking gene" tend to be more infidelity-prone as well.

In her comments on the latest study, Tara Fields, psychotherapist and author of The Love Fix, notes that many people forget how much control they actually have when their intentions are in the right place. "Whether we’re talking about infidelity or other areas of conflict, people don’t realize that instead of reacting, they can take a moment to choose the response," Fields explains. "People do have control over their reactions and their reactivity."
