Kristen Bell Shares The One Piece Of Advice She Would Give Her Younger Self

Written by Leigh Weingus

Whether it's sharing the secret to a happy marriage or championing the issues she cares about on social media, Kirsten Bell has long been one of the most refreshingly honest celebrities out there.

The actress recently opened up in a video created with the Child Mind Institute about the advice she would give herself when she was 18 and struggling with terrible anxiety and depression. “What I would say to my younger self is ... don’t be fooled by this game of perfection that humans play," she says. "Everyone's human. Everyone has problems. Everyone feels yucky on the inside sometimes. And you deserve to feel just as beautiful on the days when you wear no makeup, the days when you don’t shower, and the days when you feel depressed."

Bell has long been an advocate of taking care of both her body and mind, and she works to banish the idea of perfection in all areas of life, even if that means passing up a role, as she almost did before taking on the role of Anna in Frozen in 2013.

"When I was young, I bit my fingernails and was clumsy. I did not have good posture. That's why I initially rejected the perfection of Anna [the way she was initially written]." Bell told Good Housekeeping. "Before the project started, I said, 'No, she's got to be goofy.' After that, the filmmakers and I had a few conversations about how we could reroute it. Once we got to the dynamic of making Elsa misunderstood and different, and having Anna refuse to believe her sister did anything wrong, it felt right."
