Emma White is an interior design student who uses her home in Essex as a canvas for new ideas. The space she shares with her husband and their cat, Teddy, is sophisticated and welcoming, with plenty of fun accents thrown in. Here, White shares her design inspiration, the quickest way to outfit your home for spring, and how to relax in a space where you also work.

Where do you find interior design inspiration?

I get a lot of inspiration from Pinterest and Instagram but also when I'm walking in nature or looking at color palettes.

How does your home change with the seasons? Are you preparing any major changes for this spring?

Flowers! It's lovely to have them in the house, and they can be easily changed to suit the season. For spring, I'm bringing in lots of yellows with daffodils and a mix of yellow and orange dried flowers.

What's your favorite thing about studying interior design?

The freedom to be so creative.

What's the oldest thing in your home? Newest?

The newest is the corner unit my husband built in our bedroom. It's created a little get-ready corner with a large mirror and mini shelves. The oldest is probably our vintage drawers in our bedroom. They're half falling apart, but we got them for free!

What noises can be heard in your home? What smells?

We're lucky we don't have any main roads close, so our house is really quiet. The bedroom and living room look into the garden, so it's really peaceful hearing the birds most of the day. Oh, and our cat Teddy meowing at something or other!

What's the most sentimental thing hanging on your walls, and what's the story behind it?

I have a wall grid in my study with postcards of some of my favorite pieces of art, an old photo of my Nan and Granddad, cards from friends that make me smile, and loads more. It's always in front of me while I'm working and helps keep me motivated.

How does your home promote your health and wellness?

My home is my sanctuary. It's also where I do most of my work, so I try to keep these elements really separate. All my work is done in my study, and as soon as I finish for the day, the door is shut and it's my time to switch off. Our bedroom is somewhere I want to totally relax. So all the walls are white with a variety of textures and plants to help keep it feel cozy. Sticking to this format of work and home really helps me feel more relaxed and also productive.

What's the best compliment you've ever received on your space?

I get messages and photos on Instagram from people saying they've just painted a room the same color as ours! Or maybe they've styled something in the same way. This is the biggest compliment, and I get excited that a photo of our home can inspire someone else.
