Vegan sushi lovers, rejoice. You can now set your sights far beyond avocado and California rolls with the help of Good Catch, a bean-based fish alternative that arrived in Whole Foods Market and Thrive Market this week.

Though plant-based seafood actually isn't a new concept, Good Catch claims it does for the fish what Impossible and Beyond Burgers did for meat—that is, mimic it eerily well. (We tried it and can attest.)

The team of chefs and entrepreneurs behind Good Catch spent years mastering a six-legume blend that contains 14 g of protein (which, by the way, most people still aren't getting enough of) as well as omega-3 fatty acids from sea algae oil, giving it a similar health profile to real fish. They see it appealing to a wide audience of vegetarians, vegans, and those with seafood allergies.

"There are 8 to 9 million people in America who have shellfish and seafood allergies. What's unique about this product is it not only appeals to vegans and flexitarians but the allergen market," Chad Sarno, chef and company co-founder, tells mbg. Good Catch has its sight set beyond tuna; plant-based fish patties, sliders, and crabcakes are up next.

The tuna, which is rolling out in three flavors, could also appeal to those concerned about the sustainability and ethics of a sometimes murky fish market. When eating wild-caught, it can be hard to know where exactly your seafood is coming from, and some farmed fish is pumped with antibiotics.

mbg named plant-based seafood as one of its wellness trends to watch in 2019, and we're betting that a wave of alternative fish products is just beginning to crest. When we asked T.K. Pillan, a managing partner at a nutrition-centric equity fund PowerPlant Ventures, about the category's potential, he said, "If awareness of the negative impacts of ocean fishing and contaminants spreads quickly, plant-based fish could follow the plant-based meat market in its recent accelerated growth."

The latest addition to your healthy poke bowl is now available in Whole Foods Markets across the country and online at Thrive Market. Pro tip: Pair it with Banza's new chickpea rice and clap your fins in protein-packed, plant-based, gluten-free victory.
