Every country has its botanical treasures that become pillars of the culture. In South America, Palo Santo wood is one such treasure. If the sacred wood hasn't crossed your path, it's about to! Popping in up in everything from handcrafted perfume oils to scented candles, the "holy wood's" aromatic woodsy incense is named for the revered and mystical Incan tree from which it falls. It boasts a minty-citrus aroma with underlying notes similar to frankincense (it comes from the same family), and the wonderful thing about this wood is it's completely wild-crafted, sourced after it naturally falls from the tree.

Palo Santo is often used in the same way as sage or cedar to energetically cleanse, restore, and replenish. The bark has been burned safely for centuries in spiritual and religious rituals, as it's known to bring clarity while keeping energies grounded. Shamans have traditionally used it to clear negative energy and increase love and prosperity.

How to use Palo Santo:

  1. Light Palo Santo stick.
  2. Let the stick catch fire, and allow it to burn for about 30 seconds. Then, gently blow out the flame. If needed, you can blow on the embers to keep the smoke going throughout the process.
  3. Say aloud or silently, "I ask that the plant spirit of Palo Santo please infuse this space with blessings."
  4. To bless yourself, simply allow the smoke and rich smell to fill the room.
  5. When you are finished, place your stick in a fireproof container. Unlike conventional incense, which burns out completely after lighting it, your Palo Santo wood may be relit many times.

If nothing else, burning Palo Santo smells fantastic, and it's almost definitely cheaper than a scented candle. Although it's been a sacred ritual for years, for all the magic weavers (which is ALL of you), I hope you'll find ways to incorporate its fragrant offerings into your own life and rituals.
