How To Get Gorgeous Skin At Any Age
As the founder and creator of a 100% natural skincare line, I spend a lot of time traveling the country to meet clients, customers, and anyone interested in learning about nontoxic skincare. This inevitably means fielding many questions about the skin, which I love, because I could talk about it all day!
The two questions I’ve been hearing a lot are: (1) How does the skin of my face age? and (2) How can I protect it?
I consider this essential knowledge for anyone trying to look her best at any age! The simplest way to think about this: the areas of your face with the thinnest skin (typically the lips) are the first to show signs of aging, especially fine lines and wrinkles.
We don't typically think of lips when it comes to anti-aging, but lip lines can start to develop early and can be really difficult to minimize. Our lips feel the changes in our environment first, because they don't have much natural protection and they're not great at retaining moisture—we all know that feeling of chapped, dry, or sunburnt lips. Plus, we're all guilty of forgetting to apply SPF there. Also, the lips can start to develop lines because they're constantly in motion.
The Eye Area
The second thinnest skin is around the eye area, where crow’s feet can develop because of all of the expressions that happen there. One way to tell if you have particularly thin skin around the eye area is if you have dark circles that never seem to go away, no matter how much you sleep. Those shadows are actually muscle tissue, visible underneath the skin's very thin surface. As we age, our skin becomes thinner, with less padding and resilience, which can cause those circles to become more visible.
This is another area that is constantly engaged with facial expressions, so many small lines form that can eventually turn into deeper, more permanent wrinkles.
Neck, Jawline, and Chest Area
Women are stingy with their daily skincare and anti-aging products here, because it's so much surface area for precious serums and products with SPF. But be generous! The effects of gravity are very visible here, and skin loses structure and strength here, basically due to over-exposure and lack of attention.
What Can You Do to Keep Your Skin Gorgeous?
The best strategy is a healthy, natural skincare routine that offers preventative anti-aging care by reinforcing the skin's natural collagen support structure and moisture balance. Look for products that contain ingredients that boost cell durability while increasing firmness and elasticity. In my products, we use narcissus bulb and date palm extracts to keep the skin smooth and collagen production high.
Deep moisture is essential to reduce the skin's vulnerability—our collagen fibers, which keep our skin youthful and supple, need to have a plump, hydrated environment, or they become brittle and break which causes wrinkles and slackening.
Look for daily moisturizers that contain humectants (such as raw honey), which draw moisture from the environment into your skin. Natural oils are amazing as daily hydrators, but be sure the ones you use are of high quality and low molecular weight, so they penetrate the skin. Jojoba, calendula and extra virgin olive oils are all moisturizing, healing and soothing.
Cleansing is an essential step in keeping your skin properly hydrated—most people think cleansing is a basic step that isn't linked to anti-aging, but cleansers with soaps, alcohols or detergents can strip your skin of its moisture balance.
Instead, use a cleanser that cleanses with natural enzymes and essential oils, such as pomegranate, grapefruit and bergamot, which tone and detoxify while maintaining your skin’s deep hydration.
Feed your skin every day with products rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, as they help keep the skin strong and resilient against the effects of environmental aging.
And of course, SPF is a must at every age! Lather it all over – and definitely don’t forget those lovely lips.
The Bottom Line
Pay extra attention to the areas of your face that have thin skin, and are therefore super susceptible to environmental aging and expression-lines.
Don't ignore your jawline, neck and chest! They’re easy areas to forget, but they really benefit from daily love and care.
Avoid processed food and white sugar, and exercise often to refresh the skin with a boost in circulation. Fruits, veggies and lots of h20 are key for keeping skin happy. (Did you know one third of what we eat goes directly to nourish the skin?)
The skin directly reflects our inner health, so give your body the nourishment, rest and love it needs to glow. Gorgeous, youthful skin is all about health, strength and balance!
