Adrenal fatigue has become as common as seasonal colds. The major difference is that stressed-out adrenals can have a much graver effect on your overall health. Your adrenals are two little glands located right above the kidneys that control the release of hormones in response to stress. When a car zips by and you feel like it might hit you, your adrenals are what produce that fight-or-flight surge of energy that you suddenly feel in your stomach.
The adrenals often become exhausted from too many stimulants in the diet. Caffeine, sugar and alcohol all fall into this category, causing blood sugar levels to sky rocket, then crash, confusing the adrenals and making them work overtime.
Adrenal fatigue is a serious condition I’ve faced and overcome, and I want to share my experience in dealing with this frustrating epidemic. If you start to notice any or all of the following symptoms, it’s time to reevaluate stimulants in your diet and how they could be affecting your adrenals.
A common symptom of adrenal fatigue, brain fog causes your memory to go bust. You’ll start forgetting basic things, and your constant state of mild confusion will lead to unproductive days, or even worse, a serious accident.
Decreased sex drive
If your sex drive has decreased inexplicably, it’s your body screaming for nourishment and time to restore. Stimulants flush away vital minerals necessary for libido, and you’ll need to adopt a nutrient-dense diet to replace them.
If you find yourself exhausted, achy, or swollen after even the smallest amount of alcohol, it’s a sure sign that your little adrenal glands are screaming for help. During the height of my adrenal fatigue, I could barely carry on a conversation after even one glass of wine — exhaustion completely took over.
If you’re super aware of environmental stimuli like trains speeding past you, loud noises and flashing lights, it may be time to recharge. If your stomach jumps up into your throat or your body jolts at these stimuli, it’s a sure sign that you’ve exhausted your adrenals.
