Simply put, probiotics are live microorganisms (also referred to as healthy bacteria) that we want in our intestines. Getting enough of them will not only help improve your intestinal health but will positively impact your overall wellness too.
1. If your intestines are out of whack (inflamed, imbalanced intestinal flora, etc.), it will interfere with your body’s ability to absorb nutrients. If you’re not getting the proper nutrients, your brain and immune system will not be able to function at their optimal levels.
2. There is a growing body of research that shows a link between an unhealthy gut and mental problems like depression. In fact, according to information presented on Psych Central, 90% of the body’s serotonin is found in the digestive tract and in blood platelets! You're not just a bunch of separate parts and organs. The health of your gut directly impacts the health of your brain, and ultimately, your mood.
3. Probiotics can help more than just your gut. According to information presented in a Harvard Health Newsletter, not only do clinical studies show that probiotics help treat gastrointestinal problems, they also “delay the onset of allergies in children.”
You can get these glorious little guys into your diet with probiotic supplements or food. Foods containing probiotics include live-cultured yogurt and fermented foods like keifer, miso soup, and tempeh.
Care for your gut by getting enough probiotics and your gut will take care of you!
