5 All-Natural Allergy Treatments
It's spring, and as the world erupts into bloom, our attention often shifts to our allergies. The pollen in the air causes noses and eyes to itch and run, coughing caused by post-nasal drip, more fatigue than normal, and "allergic shiners" — those dark circles under your eyes.
As you may well know, it can be challenging to manage the symptoms of these seasonal allergies, but it's not entirely impossible. Here's a handful of options to make friends with the springtime flowers:
1. Neti Pot
Help remove the irritating pollen and other allergens that can line the nasal cavity with a neti pot. To rinse the nasal cavity and sinuses, a saline solution is poured into the nose. It may feel awkward at first, but used regularly, it is one of the top remedies for allergy prevention.
2. Nasal Saline Spray
Using a nasal saline spray can be helpful too. Often this is a simple saline, but sometimes other herbs and natural ingredients are added to the saline to help sooth irritated nasal tissues.
Lower inflammation with omega-3 fatty acids, quercitin and boswellia. Look for the latter two in natural products designed to alleviate allergy symptoms. And help support the immune system manage incoming allergens by ensuring adequate vitamin D levels.
Eating a diet of whole fresh foods, and avoiding processed foods, helps provide the body with core nutrients to deal with inflammation caused by the allergic response. Getting adequate fresh water is also a must to reduce risk of infection that can be caused by thick mucous. This is especially important when using pharmaceutical antihistamines and decongestants.
5. Local Honey
Eating local honey is thought to have a homeopathic effect. The pollen ingested from the honey helps the immune system from over-reacting to the pollen in the air.
Make the springtime season a pleasurable one by experimenting with the above remedies. Who knows, you may find yourself dancing among the blooms!
