I want to talk to you about gratitude.

I read a book a few years ago called The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin. She spent a year researching happiness and test driving the studies to see what worked and what didn't. The book inspired me to start my own happiness project, in the form of a daily gratitude journal.

It's such a simple concept. I write down three things each day that have made me happy. Some days there are major achievements and goals I surpassed, while other days it might be as simple as a swim in the ocean or a smile from a stranger.

Here's the thing. When you start seeking happiness, it pops up everywhere.

Ever heard the quote, "Energy flows where attention goes?" When you start focusing on the good stuff, you manifest more of it.

It has been almost three years since I started my journal. Three years of three awesome things.... wowzers. I'm pretty stoked with that.

Mine started in little pink notebooks, then I upgraded to Moleskine journals, then I created a blog and started posting online, and today I post on my website and use this awesome little app to note stuff down as it happens.

This practice has had a profound effect on me...

In the last three years I've moved countries (countless times), had a business fall apart at the seams, started again from scratch, made phenomenal new friends, spent four months living solo a zillion miles from home, travelled and surfed all over the globe, endured a crazy rocky relationship, and discovered my true purpose.

Each and every day I've carved out a small amount of time to reflect on the good stuff.

I don't write a lot. Normally a sentence or two for each of my "awesome things" is enough. Some days I'm scribbling them down fast because my heart is bursting. Other days it takes a little time to think about what went right instead of what went wrong. But I've realized there will always be three awesome things.

Trust me, I've had some pretty full on rough days, but there's always something out there to be grateful for.

Here are my top three reasons for starting your gratitude practice today:

  • When you get into the habit of appreciating things, you tend to see life with a fresher, more optimistic perspective. Who doesn't want that?
  • You'll start creating a blueprint of what makes you happy. Certain things will keep popping up again and again. They say success leaves clues... Well, happiness does too.
  • Your journal will serve as a beautiful reminder. Whenever I'm having a sucky moment, I can take some time out and read through random entries. It always brings a smile to my face.
