Detox, diet, weight loss, juice cleanse, grrrrrrr ... all those buzzwords had me feeling a little overwhelmed at the beginning of the year.
It seemed as if January hit, and suddenly everyone got eagle-eye focused on their health.
Well if you're anything like me, then strict diets, restrictions and regimented plans don’t work. That's why 80% of Americans have already given up on their New Year’s resolutions.
This year, my only resolution was to be more authentic with myself. In my pursuit of being my best self, I stumbled upon a detox plan that actually worked, and it was easy to stick to as well. With daily intentions and small subtle shifts, I was able to transform my entire life.
At the beginning of the year, a series of traumatic events happened that pushed me into a mini-depression. I was overwhelmed with grief and sadness, and it made trying to be happy a giant chore. I tried my best to pull out of the funk, but it seemed impossible. My happy potion had eluded me.
As the author of a book titled FIND YOUR HAPPY, I wondered why I couldn’t get a grip on my own well-being. Then I realized it was because I wasn't making my well-being a priority. I was so consumed with work demands and life stress that my health was diminishing.
I immediately put myself on a 7-day conscious cleanse. After one week, I had lost 7 pounds, had more clarity, focus and a happier outlook on life. All of the previous problems which had consumed me miraculously floated away.
These tips helped me successfully detox, and they can help you, too.
1. Add flavor to your water.
Of course we have heard drinking more water is good for us, but how often do we really do it? For me, instead of focusing on I have to drink 8 glasses of water today, I added flavor to my water. I used lavender tincture, peppermint, cucumbers and ginger. My water was so good I didn't even realize I was drinking the daily recommendation. Plus, each ingredient I added to my glass of water had powerful healing benefits.
- Lavender: Helps with anxiety, depression, mental exhaustion, insomnia, digestive problems, headaches, and skin problems.
- Peppermint: Improves digestion, overcomes stress and depression, freshens breath and calms the body.
- Cucumber: Rehydrates the body and replenishes daily vitamins, fights off cancer, relieves bad breath, aids in weight loss and digestion ,helps fight diabetes , reduces cholesterol and controls blood pressure.
- Ginger: Helps maintain normal blood circulation, prevents cold and flu, strengthens immunity, and reduces pain and inflammation
2. Do hot yoga every day.
I've had an on-again, off-again relationship with yoga for the past 6 years. Now we're seriously committed: the more I do it, the better I feel. For one week straight, I made getting to my mat a priority.
After only 7 days, my body and outlook on life had transformed. I have tapped back into a constant state of inner peace. Sweating every day is important. Challenge yourself to do 7 days in a row of any activity you love, and you will feel more vibrant.
3. Chew your food longer.
Of course what you put in your mouth is important, but it is not nearly as important as chewing your food. Most people don't chew their food enough, and this can result in poor digestion, sluggish bowel movements, and feeling hungry all the time.
For the entire week, I focused on chewing my food until it was completely dissolved. I also thanked my food; instead of resisting or thinking about what I "can" and "can't" eat, I simply practiced gratitude for all of the tasty bites.
4. Drink less coffee and more green juice.
I quit my morning latte habit cold turkey, swapping it for fresh green juice. I had more energy, ate less sugar and processed foods, and had more mental focus. If you have a habit that you are trying to quit, think about a healthier alternative to replace it with. When we remove one thing, it is important to fill the space with a healthy alternative to prevent sliding back into old habits.
5. Choose love over fear.
Completing a cleanse is not just about what we put in our bodies, but also about how we treat our bodies mentally. If you are consumed with fear-based thoughts and negative judgments towards yourself and others, no amount of green juice or yoga will help you feel better. Instead focus consciously on positive perceptions. Practice kindness, compassion and self-love.
