Intuitive eating is so helpful to recover from any kind of eating issues. From chronic dieting to emotional eating or bulimia, intuitive eating principles are essential to being able to eat in a balanced and healthy way. Even if you tend to overeat quiet often, I think intuitive eating can be the solution to your problems.

Intuitive eating definitely helped me to recover from my 15 years of struggle with bulimia

But what is intuitive eating? You might have heard the term without exactly knowing what it is.

Intuitive eating is based on one main belief: your body knows better than your mind what’s good for you.

And this is true for so many things. For example, your heart never misses a beat, you never forget to breathe and your temperature is always maintained.

Regarding our eating behaviors however, it’s pretty rare to let our body decide what’s good for us. This makes sense when you know that we're surrounded by new diets and messages about food, what’s good for us and what’s not. As a result, most of us have lost this connection to our deep internal feelings when it comes to food.

Many of us eat because it’s time, to socialize or maybe when we are bored. We eat foods we think are good for us, even if we don’t really enjoy them. But have you already stopped and asked yourself, am I really hungry? What do I really want to eat? What do I feel like eating now?

If you are hungry and listen to your body carefully, you'll be able to know what your body really needs.

Here are a few principles that intuitive eaters respect:
  • Eat when hungry
  • Stop when satisfied (even if you still have food on your plate)
  • Listen carefully to your body's signals
  • Eat only what you really want to eat
  • Eat in a calm environment, without distractions
  • Avoid eating when you're stressed, upset or sad
  • Pay attention to your eating experience, the taste, the texture of your food. Is the experience satisfying?
What about you? You might want to give it a try during a few days or a week and see how this can actually improve your eating experience

Usually people notice that they are more quickly satisfied and end up eating less. They're also able to reduce their cravings as they are listening to what their body really needs.
