Are You Balanced? Here are the 7 Kinds of Wellness You Need

The word wellness has become a popular term in the yoga community, often referred to in the same sentence as cleanses, intense yoga sessions, or balancing the chakras. In most instances, wellness is used to refer to physical well-being.

From a holistic perspective, there are many aspects of wellness, and living well with total balance requires that we attend to all aspects, not just one or two.

Following are 7 aspects of wellness that I consider when assessing clients’ overall wellness:

1. Emotional Wellness

This involves learning to decrease stress and become attentive to your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It involves cultivating an optimistic style of thinking and developing awareness and acceptance of your feelings as well as a capacity to manage them in a healthy way.

2. Physical Wellness

This involves decreasing stress as well as developing body awareness, eating healthy foods, developing personal responsibility for your own health, getting adequate sleep, nurturing and caring for your physical being, and engaging in physical activity.

3. Spiritual Wellness

This encourages discovering a sense of meaning and purpose and connection with something larger than you. It relates to the capacity of being able to balance your inner needs with the needs of the world.

4. Social Wellness

This involves creating positive and meaningful relationships, utilizing healthy communication skills, maintaining respect toward yourself and others, and creating a healthy support system.

5. Intellectual Wellness

This encourages engaging in stimulating creative and mental activities and developing knowledge and skills. It involves discovering your potential for sharing your gifts with the world in meaningful ways.

6. Occupational Wellness

This emphasizes discovering your calling and engaging in work that is personally meaningful and consistent with your passion, values, and life purpose. It involves learning to balance work and leisure time.

7. Environmental Wellness

This encourages living in harmony with the natural world and understanding the impact of your interaction with nature and the environment. It also involves caring for your well-being by protecting yourself from environmental toxins and contributing to the well-being of the environment.

Based on this information, how can you begin to re-imagine what wellness means to you?

Are you living well with balance that nurtures a sense of peace, happiness, and well-being?
