Olympic Q & A: Katherine Reutter, USA Speedskating
Katherine Reutter is making her Olympic debut in Vancouver, skating in all four women's speedskating events, and is a medal contender in each. She won her first World Cup race in September 2009, with gold in the 1000m. Katherine also hails from the same hometown as six-time Olympic medalist Bonnie Blair, who has provided inspiration for Reutter throughout her career.
MindBodyGreen: Were you always athletic?
Katherine Reutter: I've been athletic ever since I was a little kid whether it was gymnastics, taekwondo, softball, or speedskating. I started speedskating when I was 5 and it was different from any other sport because I was never willing to miss a practice.
MBG: How do you cross-train during the spring and summer?
KR: We skate from May to March, but the bulk of our summer training is dryland training, weightlifting, and bike riding.
MBG: Do you visualize your races before you compete?
KR: I always have to visualize before going out to race. I visualize what I need to do, what I think others will try to do, and how I'll react to them.
MBG: Favorite quote?
KR: What lies behind us and what lies before of us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us. -- Ralph Waldo Emerson
MBG: Favorite healthy food?
KR: Raw oatmeal with plain yogurt, a banana, and almonds.
MBG: Favorite guilty indulgence?
KR: Chocolate cake with ice cream:)
MBG: What’s on your playlist before you compete?
KR: Before I race I mostly need to relax. I don't like to listen to pump up music or else it gets my nerves going without having a plan. I listen to calmer music so that I can think of exactly what I need to do while having a relaxing distraction.
MBG: Who inspires you?
KR: I'm truly inspired by anyone who reaches the point where going on seems impossible, but they do. My Mom and Dad have been the 2 people to set the best example for me by showing me what it takes to keep going in the face of financial difficulty, physical exhaustion, or emotional break down. It takes true strength of character to redefine your limits by pushing past them.
MBG: Is there anyone you are looking forward to meeting at the Vancouver Olympics?
KR: I'm looking forward to meeting anyone and everyone who is part of Team USA in Vancouver. That's the best part about the Olympics...coming together as people; as part of our nation, but also as the world.
MBG: How will you celebrate after hopefully winning Gold?
KR: I'll sing my national anthem on top of the podium while watching my flag be raised above every other country's in the world. And then I'll probably go out for ice cream:)
