There is nothing more uncomfortable than the feeling of rising temperatures and sweat on your face when you are nowhere near a beach. Not only does the combination of sweat and makeup breed bacteria, but it makes you feel like you completely wasted your time by even bothering with a beauty routine in the first place. Healthy skin goes beyond just drinking water regularly and wearing sun protection every day. In my experience as both an esthetician and acupuncturist, I’ve picked up on a few things I know make all the difference in achieving and maintaining beautiful skin.
Here, six foolproof ways to summer-proof your beauty routine and look glowing (not sweaty) while you're at it.
Creating a sense of inner peace is an important part of looking good. Someone who is constantly "in their head" will develop frown lines. Meditating just 15 minutes a day can reap some seriously great benefits such as faster decision making, better sleep, and fewer chances of developing lines in between your brows.
2. Give holistic facials a chance.
Most of my career in aesthetics involved lasers, peels, and all kinds of professional treatments that promised to lighten, brighten, lift, and tighten. They all worked but came with their own set of side effects such as inflammation, redness, and, one worst-case scenario, a burn. And oh yeah, they hurt, sting, and don’t feel good while you’re getting it done. Once I became an acupuncturist, I noticed the less stressed someone was, the better their skin and overall appearance looked. A holistic facial is entirely differently from a standard one: Whether it's by using essential oils, crystals, and breathing techniques, skin is nourished through the increased circulation that comes with exercise. The best part? Lowering stress levels relieves the tension behind premature aging.
3. Eat your veggies; don't just drink them.
Juices can throw your insulin off balance because you aren’t eating the fiber. This basically means that the juice you’re drinking is turning into sugar in your body. Sugar is skin’s biggest enemy. Stick to juicing greens rather than just fruits and veggies that are high on the glycemic index. Sneak veggies into your meals every single day and your skin will thank you for it.
4. Take relaxation as seriously as you do social media.
If you have time to check, check, and recheck Instagram and Facebook, then you have time for self-care. Reiki, cupping, massage, acupuncture, and breath work speak to your soul and benefit your body and skin. Rinse and repeat often and step away from the digital devices.
5. Get to know your beauty products' ingredients.
There is evidence that chemicals found in many of our skin care products, such as parabens, are linked to hormonal imbalances that can lead to other health issues. If you want to know what’s in your skin care and makeup products, go to the Skin Deep Cosmetics Database. Eating right, sleeping well, and keeping a positive mindset while staying informed about what you’re putting in your body and on your skin will give you a lasting glow.
