There's one beauty secret that many A-listers share: They regularly use eco-friendly, organic, or nontoxic products. So in honor of Earth Day, we think it's an ideal time to look to the women we admire for some all-natural makeup and skin care advice and honor their conscious consumption.
Not long ago, "green" or "eco-" beauty products had only niche appeal—but, nowadays, it seems it's hard to find a lady (famous or otherwise) out there who hasn't swapped at least one aspect of her routine for its more natural counterpart (aluminum-free pits, anyone?).
Of course, there are women everywhere who are committed to supporting eco-friendly brands and products on the 365. But, there's no better day than today to celebrate the environment (and your health), gather some inspo, and feel all warm and soft inside (and outside, too). Is it just us—or has going green never looked so good?
In an interview with Into the Gloss, Watson's top picks were unsurprisingly of the eco-friendly persuasion—including some of our personal favorites like Tata Harper, RMS Beauty, and Rahua. But even with her green beauty obsession, Watson understands the concept of balance. "Most of my routine keeps to an 80/20 philosophy because it's very difficult to be a complete purist, especially when working in the film industry," she said. "You can end up driving yourself a bit mad and make it more stressful than it should be. Sometimes you just need a mascara to be waterproof and that's OK."
The 25-year-old actress—who reportedly eats clay and bottles her own spring water—has developed a reputation as a beauty renegade. "All of my friends in their mid-30s and early 40s laugh a lot and have no wrinkles. That is the secret to good skin. I swear. Everybody has this big thing about chemicals and facials, but it is just laughter," she told Into the Gloss. Shailene cautions against using soap and makes her own makeup! "Beets are my go-to for lip color," she told InStyle. "Roast one for 30 to 50 minutes at 350 degrees, depending on the size of the beet. When cool, rub it on your lips. I eat them after.” A girl after our own heart.
Not only is Rosario Dawson a multitalented star, the green entrepreneur is the founder of Studio 189, a brand that uses fashion to implement social change and eco-friendly practices. She's partnered with Kiehl's to support Mother Nature and the recycling cause, linking up with Recycle Across America (RAA), a nonprofit that works to make recycling easier for everyone. When it comes to her personal beauty stash, Rosario reaches for brands like John Masters Organics and Tara Smith. "It's affordable, yummy-smelling, and eco-friendly," she told Shape about her Tara Smith Feed the Root Conditioner. "Tara says she tested it on film stars, not animals."
In addition to running the mega-successful Honest Beauty, a nontoxic line of beauty products that recently added a hair care collection to its lineup, and acting, she’s a mother of two. No wonder she describes her beauty routine as "a quick, rushed situation." Alba isn't one to ever stop multitasking, "I'm always doing something when I'm putting on my makeup," she told InStyle. "I'm taking a call or dealing with the kids as I'm throwing on my tinted moisturizer, cream blush, mascara, and lip balm. If I want to amp it up, I need to give myself a solid 15 minutes to do a proper smoky eye. Otherwise I'll look like a hot mess."
Take inspiration from Lake Bell, whose tips are easy to adopt for Earth Day and beyond. "Every product that I use—especially with the baby in the house—from diapers to glass cleaner, is now eco-friendly," the actress told InStyle. "I do it not only for the environment but to save my lungs and my baby's lungs. The soon-to-be mom of two also maintains a skin care routine that is just up our alley. "I do super-hot water followed by Tata Harper Hydrating Floral Essence," the natural beauty told InStyle. "I'm a purist. I keep it real, real simple."
