These Are The Tools Emma Stone Uses To Control Her Anxiety

Emma Stone opened up this morning about her life-long struggle with anxiety, a condition that affects 40 million people in the U.S. In a video for the Child Mind Institute, a non-profit offering mental health services to children, the Oscar winner explained that anxiety “has always been something that I’ve lived with and it flares up in big ways at different times in my life.” She offered assurance that “while it’s happening, like while I’m in a phase of big turmoil, it feels like it’s never gonna end—but it does.”

As a child, Stone's anxiety was so severe, she worried it would prevent her from being independent. “I truly, as a kid, did not think I would ever be able to move away from home or be apart from people I had separation anxiety with,” she said. In an interview with Vogue last year, Stone described her symptoms as immobilizing, saying, “I didn’t want to go to my friends’ houses or hang out with anybody, and nobody really understood.”

Stone says she wishes she could tell her younger self how many tools can alleviate the pain of anxiety. What helped the actress the most? Great therapists, great cognitive behavioral tools, and meditation in concert have led Stone to live "a pretty normal and exciting and vibrant life.”

Dr. Harold S. Koplewicz, a leader at Child Mind Institute, told People that stars like Stone, who children look up to, can help destigmatize mental health struggles: “Here are these remarkable individuals who give a message that says ‘if you are not ashamed, if you speak up, if you get a diagnosis and if you get treatment, your life can be as full and as productive as anyone’s—if not even more so than some average people. And now I think it’s time for us to recognize how real, common and treatable these diseases are.”

Though Stone still encounters anxiety, the perspective and tools she's gained have freed her. “It’s so nice to know in those moments of real intensity that it will shift and it will change and there’s a lot I can do to help myself.”
