If you read my previous story on EMF sensitivity, you will know I have been battling a severe case of chronic fatigue and Lyme disease since 2013. I am sharing my story piece by piece, as it has been an unexpectedly in-depth healing process. As a quick recap, in January 2013, my health completely shattered and I ended up fully bedridden. I saw five doctors (including infectious disease) over a span of eight months before beginning treatment for extensive infections. However, come March 2016, all attempts to get well had failed, so I began exploring other options.

Uncovering the cause of my migraines

In June 2016, it was discovered that I had a negative, flu-like response to colored lights (or herxheimer reaction). This didn't make any sense, so I started experimenting. I had a small blue light that I had used sporadically for acne, so I pulled this out from hiding and started placing it on different areas of my face. Migraines appeared within seconds. This had never happened in the past, so something was deeply wrong. So being a naturally born researcher, I started digging deeper.

What did I find? According to a recent study, blue light therapy1 was effective in treating antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria, and when combined with silver, the treatment was even more effective. At the time, I was actually on silver. So this made sense. And then the study mentioned that light therapy prevented biofilm formation.

Here's exactly what my LED treatment schedule looked like.

What's biofilm? Biofilm2 is one of the major challenges behind superbugs because they protect pathogens from all forms of decimation. At the time, I was actually on medication for biofilm disintegration (and had been for over two years). Obviously, however, it wasn't strong enough. So what did I do next? I started reading more and more on the benefits of light therapy, from its ability to fight cancer, alleviate back pain3, hasten the healing from spinal cord injuries4 in rats, treat Alzheimer's disease5 also in rats, heal acne6, reduce the signs of aging7, improve sleep quality8, and more.

So I figured it was time to purchase a device and try it. And since the benefits of various problems seemed to respond better to certain colors, I purchased an LED light therapy mask with seven different colors: red, dark blue, green, light blue, yellow, white, and purple. When this device arrived, I simply started using the dark blue light on my entire face. That didn't go well—I got sick with flu-like symptoms within seconds. I worked myself up to 10 minutes a day over the course of two weeks. I was in bed every single day, for multiple hours at a time. Once this became more tolerable, I started incorporating other colors (and placed the light all over my body). This continued for six weeks, and at one point, I was up to over seven hours a day.

So, did light therapy cure my chronic fatigue?

This entire process was exhausting and provoked endless herxheimer reactions. My reactions included burning joints, migraines, extreme exhaustion, hypotension, and severe inflammation. Once I saw my physician after six weeks of light therapy, my labs indicated extreme inflammation from all the toxic release (or herxheimer reactions). Unfortunately, this is the process you must go through. My doctor was rather impressed, as he saw that I was making considerable headway.

Did light therapy cure me? Not quite, but it brought me one step closer to regaining my health. After this event, I became more responsive to various medications, which was a very positive sign. For those struggling with serious levels of infection (whether it be chronic fatigue, Lyme disease, or something else), light therapy may be what's missing. It's been a lifesaving modality for me (and I deeply wish I had known about it sooner).
