New Year, New Skin Rituals? Here's How To Breathe New Energy Into Your Beauty Care

Emma Mildon, the Spiritual PA, pulls on her global travels to bring you fun and invigorating ways to enlighten and enbrighten your skin—this list is a treasure trove for skin care junkies who want to give something new a try.

Make 2017 the year you get your bright, bold, beautiful skin glow on with this mix of ancient, Ayurvedic, and astral skin care rituals.

Detox your skin

The year 2016 saw the rise of all things charcoal. The year 2017 is the rise of the charcoal facial. Why? Toxins stick to activated charcoal, so any nasties in your skin are essentially pulled out by using it. Whether you try your hand at a charcoal sponge cleanse (a centuries-old Japanese technique that uses a sponge imbued with charcoal to gently wash and cleanse) or an activated charcoal home DIY facial using Astral Collective's Good Vibes Only Detox Mask, it'll be "peace out" to anything nasty lurking in those pores of yours.

Dosha facials

Ayurveda believes we operate from different doshas—be it Vata (wind), Kapha (Earth), or Pitta (Fire). It's not uncommon to use different elements on all doshas, but usually one is more dominant. First, find out which you are: Vata skin is often dry, Pitta is sensitive, Kapha is oily/combination. Once you know this, you'll be able to eat to best support your dosha for beauty from the inside out, or even get an Ayurvedic facial tailored specifically to it. You can also find some divine skin care at Pratima, so drop down and get your dosha on, girl.

Soak your skin

We've all gone google-eyed over that classic Bali petal bath #wishyouwerehear. Well, news flash, petal baths are so 2016. This year focus on soaking your skin and your soul mixing mystic potions like Epsom salts, essential oils, and crystals to help add a healing, calming, or energizing vibe to a soak session. Add skin food like clay, organic milk, and coconut oil to help nourish your skin while you chill. I'm loving the Nomad Pink Clay Epsom Salts.

Try yoga, for your face

Yes, there are yoga poses—to work out your face! Or if you need a little yoga face coaching, try a yoga facial. They make you feel like your face has had a face-lift, and they're a great way to relax the facial muscles, which can help with stress, wrinkles, and worry lines. Since your face can't lift weights or go take on a SoulCycle class, face yoga is worth a try!

Eat your skin care

One thing many rituals and cultures agree on is that beauty really is an inside job. Clean eating ensures your body gets the minerals and nutrition it needs and supports healthy nails, hair, and skin. All signs point to your gut: If it's happy, you will feel beautiful. Support your gut microbiome with pro- and prebiotic foods, and include plenty of foods that have natural antimicrobial properties, especially herbs and spices such as garlic, ginger, and rosemary, and also coconut oil.
