It's so cold and crisp outside, you'd far rather sit by the fire with a cup of hot chocolate. What's more, your poor skin has taken a beating. How to rescue it? With this vanilla body butter.
I’m a huge fan of at-home anything, but beauty DIY is what turns me on, especially when it doesn’t take more than a minute or two to mix up. This mega concoction is great to use at night if your skin feels dry but has also broken out (sigh). The good news is that you don’t have to search far and wide to stock up on ingredients, plus do-it-all formulations offer instant gratification, immediately softening skin and even regenerating hair.
There’s nothing more relaxing than being cocooned in aromatherapy oils, especially when they cleverly mix soothing vanilla and warming black pepper to trigger olfactory memories from the moment you step out of the shower until you crawl back into bed. A humectant step up from body lotion, hand-crafted butters also ensure skin glows and feels nourished in the face of winter’s harsh elements. Get mixing!
Vanilla Body Butter with Black Pepper Essential Oil
(Recipe from Charlynn Avery, master aromatherapist at Aura Cacia)
Makes 2 fluid ounces
24 drops vanilla oil
24 drops black pepper oil
3 ounces organic fair trade cocoa butter
1 fluid ounce sweet almond oil
4-ounce amber bottle
1. In a heavy saucepan, melt cocoa butter over low heat.
2. Add sweet almond oil and continue heating just until mixture has clarified.
3. Remove from heat and stir in essential oils.
4. Pour into a jar, replace lid, and allow to cool undisturbed for 12 hours.
5. To use, rub a small amount into hands and massage into skin.
For a creamier consistency, try whipping the mixture during the cool-down phase, between steps 3 and 4.
