Move Over, Hotdogs. A Kale-Eating Contest Is On Its Way
Kale has had quite the Cinderella story. Apparently, before 2012, the largest buyer of kale was Pizza Hut, who didn't serve it but used it as décor along their salad bar. But then, with a little help from a fairy godmother (read: a PR firm), it became the king of superfoods, with quinoa as its queen.
If you thought we'd already reached peak kale, think again.
On the heels of Nathan's Famous annual hot dog eating contest, a New York food festival will host a much healthier version of the all-you-can-eat competition: the Kale Cup. Which means, of course, that kale is officially as American as a hot dog.
According to the AP, the Kale Yeah! contest will take place at the Taste of Buffalo food festival in New York on July 9. Contestants will have eight minutes to consume as much of the curly leaves as possible and the winner will take home $2,000.
And though they might never want to eat the leafy green again by the end, at least they can be sure that this won't have the same adverse effects as stuffing their faces with hot dogs. Let's just hope the kale is massaged or else it could be really tough to swallow.
The festival will also feature not-so-healthy fare like buffalo mac and cheese and s'mores cupcakes, but the kale-centered contest is meant to highlight the healthier options available at the event. Festival rules even stipulate that each vendor must offer at least one health-conscious menu item.
We can't wait to watch and see who kales the competition. (Sorry.)
