A leading voice on modern spirituality, Emma Mildon has traveled the world studying everything from auras to aromatherapy. This week, we're sharing her expertise in a series on how to decode your dreams and apply their insights once you wake up. To learn more, check out her new mindbodygreen class, The Essential Guide to Dream Interpretation.

Do you dream in black and white? Or are you more of a technicolored rainbow dreamer? Take note on your next visit to dreamland and see what hidden meaning your dream's colors may have in store:

1. Blue

Blue represents truth, wisdom, heaven, eternity, devotion, tranquility, loyalty, and openness—pretty nice, yeah? Perhaps you are expressing an itch to soul search, to escape and explore new lands, or to take on a new experience. The presence of this color in your dream may symbolize your clarity of mind, your connection with your spiritual guides, and your optimism about the future.

2. Brown

Brown in dreams represents a dreamer's worldliness, practicality, domestic bliss, physical comfort, and conservatism. Brown also represents the earth and may be a sign that you need to get back to your roots. Women in particular who see a lot of brown in their dreams—think the ground beneath your feet as you walk along a forest path or the brown of a lover's eyes—could be experiencing "nesting" feelings and getting ready to begin a family and focus their attention on domestic life.

3. Black

Black symbolizes the unknown and unconscious, danger, mystery, mourning, rejection, and even hate. Blackness invites you to dive deeper in your unconscious to gain a better understanding of yourself, for it can indicate a lack of love and support in your waking life. But black also represents potential and possibilities. If blackness clouds a joyful dream, it could imply hidden spiritual and deep, divine qualities. Darkness isn't always about the evil—it can also be about the light.

4. Fuchsia

My favorite color! Despite its exuberant hue, the color fuchsia represents mediation and your connection to your spirituality. If you're dreaming in fuchsia, you are most likely letting go of old stale thoughts or teachings from your upbringing that you may no longer agree with and welcoming a new change. This color is also associated with emotional stability.

5. Gray

Gray indicates fear, fright, depression, ill health, ambivalence, and confusion—yikes! You may be simply feeling a bit out-of-sync in your day-to-day life if you're dreaming in shades of gray. On a more positive note, the color gray can symbolize your individuality or signify a crossroads in your life.

6. Green

Green symbolizes a positive change, good health, growth, fertility, healing, hope, vigor, vitality, peace, and serenity. The color may also be telling you to just go ahead and do something. Alternatively, green is a metaphor for a lack of experience in some area of your life. Green is also symbolic of a struggle to gain recognition and establish your independence. On the darker side, this color is often associated with greed and jealousy.

7. Pink

Pink dreams represent love, joy, sweetness, happiness, affection, and kindness. Alternatively, the color implies immaturity or weakness, especially when it comes to love. Waking unsettled from dreams full of the color pink may indicate that you are struggling with issues of dependency or problems with your parents.

8. Red

Red is an indication of raw energy, force, vigor, intense passion, aggression, power, courage, impulsiveness, and passion—sounds like a bit of a high-octane recipe for disaster doesn't it? The color red has deep emotional and spiritual connotations, both positive and negative—it all depends on the context.

Are you dreaming about a red sea tossing and turning in a storm? Perhaps you've got some deeply embedded anger issues to sort through. How about the rolling waves of red satin sheets billowing across your skin? Whoa there, your significant other better get ready to be pounced on the minute they get home from work tonight. One thing's for sure: When you're seeing red in your slumber, it's time to take a moment to really process what these dreams might mean before moving forward.

9. Yellow

If the dream is a pleasant one, then the color yellow is symbolic of intellect, energy, agility, happiness, harmony, and wisdom. On the other hand, if the dream is unpleasant, the color represents deceit, disgrace, betrayal, cowardice, and sickness. You might have a fear of making decisions or find it hard to take action in your waking life. Your desire to please others means you put others' needs ahead of your own needs and happiness. Yellow is also the color of creativity, so there may be an idea or creative project in you waiting to come out.
