Looking your best involves more than just having a great dress, perfect makeup, and a fancy hairstyle; you also need to take care of yourself from the inside out! After all, getting sublimely glowy skin, shiny hair, and a fit-looking body starts with fueling yourself in a healthy way. (On the flip side, if you eat a ton of junk leading up to a big event, it will totally show.)
My perspective is that health and true beauty are synonymous, and it isn't one thing such as food or exercise that makes you healthy or beautiful but an overall lifestyle: how you eat, your sleep routine, how you handle stress, the way you move your body and meditation. Central to my Beauty Detox dietary approach is how to optimize digestion for more nutrient absorption, ongoing cleansing, higher energy, and staying more alkaline.
First thing in the morning is a morning meditation, ideally 30 minutes (or as little as 10, depending on the day). I practice the Kriya Yoga meditation techniques taught by Paramahansa Yoganandya and The Self-Realization Fellowship. We all do it together in the bedroom as a family, with Lil Bub (aka Emerson, my 3-month-old son), either breastfeeding or pacifying with my boob on my lap. He has already sat through thousands of meditations with me in the womb and now out in the world! Then it's a big cup of hot water with fresh lemon and two SBO probiotics with fresh water right away—these are the specific probiotics I've found that truly work to get through the stomach acid to help increase nutrient absorption and balance our gut flora, which is essential for health and beauty. Soil-borne organisms (SBOs) are found in healthy soil, and our ancestors naturally consumed them in small amounts on freshly picked vegetables, and they balance our bodies as well as the soil. With the advent of modern food processing, we now have to supplement them.
I drink around 24 ounces of the Glowing Green Smoothie (GGS), the foundation of my Beauty Detox program; it's packed with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and fiber, a beauty elixir that's about 70 percent greens and 30 percent fibrous fruit. I'm up all kinds of hours of the night with my 3 month-old son, so I'm pretty hungry in the mornings now. About 30 minutes after GGS I have a gluten-free avocado and sprout wrap. By midmorning I usually also have a Power Protein Smoothie, another Beauty Detox staple. I need to make sure I fuel my body, especially now with all the breastfeeding on demand and this little munchkin constantly feeding off my body!
Skin Care Routine
I wash face with simply water. It's so dry in L.A. that I don't like to use a cleanser in the morning; I don't sweat in the night here and I don't want to strip my skin. I have a pretty minimal routine, especially with the newborn, but I have a few regular go-to's so I feel polished for the day. The first thing I apply is a tinted moisturizer-cum-sunscreen. One product I use is by Suntegrity. What I like about it is that it doesn't have the chemicals of other sunscreens; it contains non-nano-size zinc-oxide to act as a full-spectrum SPF 30 protector. It also contains antioxidants and beneficial plant ingredients such as organic green tea to nourish your skin during the day.
I'm a big believer in not using too many products on your face, which can be clogging and congestive. (You won't catch me wearing foundation unless it's for a shoot or event). I've been using this product for years, it's called the Aura Multi-Use Courtesan Cream Blush by Vapour. I put a dot on each cheek and just lightly tap it in for a little bit of rosiness, which I think is really pretty and looks natural. Next is eyeliner. I love Mesmerize Eyeliner, another Vapour cult buy. What I love about this eyeliner is it's mineral-based and doesn't contain drying or irritating chemicals, which is especially important since you're using eyeliner on the delicate eye area. The mascara I've been using a lot lately is by Physicians Formula. It's hypoallergenic and contains fewer scary chemical ingredients than other mascaras. Then I put on Sally B's Lip Skinnies in Pink Roses, which doesn't have petroleum ingredients (which can't be metabolized) and is also moisturizing.
I love Aura Cacia Aromatherapy Roll-Ons. I love using these as a natural perfume to have a fresh, uplifting scent as I go about my day. These are organic, based in pure essential oils, and safe to put directly on your skin. My favorite scent is the Grounding Root Chakra one. I like to use them when I practice yoga also.
I try to get in some yoga self-practice in between feeding Emerson, who isn't on a schedule yet, or while he is napping, which is still very unpredictable at this point! I do a version of my Beauty Detox Power yoga DVD, my version on moving mindfully and breathing into the asanas for at least a few breaths, to help me feel centered at the same time as strengthening my body.
I used to hike, but with the baby now I'm doing regular barefoot beach walks with him strapped to my body to get the benefits of "earthing," or touching the ground—it has been shown in research to help reduce inflammation.
I love us to have a nice family dinner and say grace/prayers/blessings and talk about our day. Emerson is usually feeding on my lap along with the rest of us! I make sure to turn my cellphone to airplane mode because this is really the time to switch off. I used to incessantly text and be in touch with my clients and work stuff until all hours, but now I generally don't respond after 8 p.m.
I drink the Nourish Your Nervous System Elixir (recipe from my third book, The Beauty Detox Power) a few hours after dinner to chill out, and as the name suggests, it soothes my nervous system for a great beauty sleep ahead. I try to read every evening for at least 10 minutes—either a novel or some spiritual writings from my guru, Paramahansa Yoganandya—and again, do some sort of family meditation with the three of us. Emerson is on my lap, and we'll try to do a little longer in the evenings, ideally 30 minutes, but if not, at least 20.
Before bed, I do abhyanga (oil massage) with coconut oil, since I usually don't have time to do it in the morning, and rinse the day off with a homemade scrub of equal parts coconut oil and sea salt, with some lavender essential oil. I wash my face with added in for a deep cleanse, and wash off my makeup with the Chopra Center's new Pryaderm Cleansing Mousse. Then I'll use the Rose Water Toner from Ayurveda Pura to help balance the skin, followed by a bit of Sally B night serum mixed with the Sally B Skin Boosters, a pure vitamin C product.
