Q & A with Nutritionist Keri Glassman: Tips on Diet, Weight Loss & Healthy Foods for 2010

Keri Glassman, M.S., R.D., C.D.N., is the author of The Snack Factor Diet, and most recently, The O2 Diet. She serves as the Nutrition Contributor to the CBS Early Show and the Beauty and Skin Care expert for WebMD. Glassman has appeared on the Today Show, MSNBC, Fox News Channel, NY1, and has contributed to and been widely quoted in top publications and websites including: Marie Claire, Prevention, Allure, Self, Shape, Harper's Bazaar, Fitness, US Weekly and Men's Journal. She is also the president of Keri Glassman, A Nutritious Life, a nutrition counseling and consulting practice focusing on weight loss/maintenance, pediatric nutrition, lifestyle/wellness/beauty, pre/post natal nutrition, cardiovascular health, and sports performance.

MindBodyGreen: For people unfamiliar with The O2 Diet, can you summarize?

Keri Glassman: The O2 Diet is a high antioxidant based program that will make you healthy, thin and beautiful! It is an empowering plan that focuses on eating real food consistently through the day and also takes into account the other factors of your life that affect your overall health -- stress, sleep, your environment, exercise and even your beauty regimen!

MBG: Many out there want to start off their January with a diet/lifestyle change -- what advice and/or tips do you have?

KG: Make realistic changes that you can be CONSISTENT with! Keep a food journal. Take it one meal, one day at a time! Feel GOOD and EMPOWERED putting healthy foods in your body.

MBG: What is the biggest key to success in losing weight and maintaining weight loss?

KG: Ridding yourself of the "all or nothing" or as I say "I'll begin on Monday syndrome" and learning to listen to your body and eating when you are "slightly hungry" and stopping eating when (no matter what you are eating!) when you are "slightly satisfied".

MBG: Are there any facts about nutrition/diet/fitness that people don't know about or overlook?

KG: Nutrition is changing daily! That is what is so exciting about it. It is a new science and new studies are constantly being reported.

MBG: What's the easiest thing we can do immediately to be healthier?

KG: Add in more antioxidants! Blueberries, kale, nuts, artichokes...

MBG: You're obviously very busy -- how do you relax?

KG: Hmmm... GREAT question... I try HARD to but it is hard... My favorite relaxing time is rainy or snowy lazy Sundays with my kids. I also drink tea EVERY night -- usually 2 times per night. This is my daily unwinding time.

MBG: What does mind/body/green wellness mean to you?

KG: When I think of this I think of A Nutritious Life! This is what I live, breath, eat and teach all day every day... When you eat well, drink sufficiently, manage stress, exercise you have the energy, creativity and love to pamper, exercise, eat well to have more energy, creativity...

MBG: Favorite healthy food?

KG: SO hard! I love so many!! Ok, hmmm... Broiled brussel sprouts, beets, mushrooms.

MBG: Favorite guilty indulgence?

KG: Really decadent warm chocolate chip cookies.

MBG: 5 things you can't live without?

KG: I am a minimalist - I can only live WITH 5 things! :)
