We often don't fully appreciate things in life until they're not working well—and health is a big example.

For the past few years, I'd been burning the candle at both ends with a blow torch. I left before the sun rose, working over 60 hours a week managing my functional medicine health center. I arrived home at dark just in time to read my kids a book, pray with them, and cuddle before bed. Downtime wasn't in my schedule.

I knew years of this high-paced life was going to catch up with me sooner or later, but I told myself that people depended on me. My son and daughter needed their dad, my wife needed her husband and my patients needed their health care practitioner.

The elimination diet helped me uncover food intolerances, boosted my energy, cleared my skin and restored my sleep.

We can be relentless until the universe gives warning signs and forces us to slow down. My warning signs came in the form of my digestion getting worse, my skin breaking out, being unable to get a good night's sleep and becoming increasingly more fatigued during the day.

I already ate healthy, but I knew I had to do something more, especially because of my MTHFR gene mutations, adrenal fatigue and gut issues.

To jump-start my healing journey, I turned to the protocol that I saw work in so many of my patients' lives: the elimination diet.

By removing the foods that most often cause problems and focusing on nutrient-dense nourishing foods, you can begin the healing process. Then, after this elimination phase, you start bringing back foods that you took out one by one. This gives you clear insight as to which foods work for your body and which ones don't.

The result is a food plan that's personalized for you. We all have different biochemistry, genetics and microbiomes, so the elimination diet allows you to tailor your meals based to your unique makeup.

Personally, the elimination diet helped me uncover the food intolerances that were wrecking my digestion (dairy and sugar), boosted my energy, cleared my skin and restored my sleep.

As a functional medicine practitioner, I see people on a daily basis who are kept from living the life they want because of health problems. But I didn't fully understand it until it happened to me.

Now, having regained my health, I appreciate it so that much more.
