7 Ways To Harness The Power Of The New Moon In Capricorn

Ready, set, goals! The new moon in Capricorn comes January 9th and puts our eyes on the proverbial prize. It’s time to think big… and then even bigger. Capricorn is the sign of outsized ambition — the zodiac’s motivator who gets the job done right.

New moons are the time to plant seeds to be harvested under the light of the corresponding full moon six months later: in this case, July 19, 2016.

Heads up: We'll also have to practice patience. This new moon happens to fall right after Jupiter goes retrograde in Virgo, a symbiotic fellow earth sign (January 7-May 9), and Mercury turns retrograde in Capricorn (January 8-25).

"Retrograde" means a planet appears to go backward, and everything under that planet's jurisdiction can get delayed, scrambled or mired in red tape. There may be a few do-overs required this time around, especially since both Mercury and Jupiter govern communication.

We may KNOW what we want, but it could take a couple of extra weeks (or months) to properly execute those missions. Even as we formulate grand plans, we'll need to tweak them a few times to make sure our #goals are established on terra firma.

Don't get frustrated if your big ventures don't immediately launch into the stratosphere. Instead of pacing anxiously or obsessing, use the extra time to tighten up your game, and even to explore other avenues or options.

Here are few tips for tapping into this future-focused new moon.

1. Dust yourself off and try again.

Capricorn is symbolized by the mountain goat climbing the rocky trail — stumbling, getting up again, forging ahead. Persistence is this sign's specialty. And let’s face it: it DOES take persistence to get through the pressures of this season for some people. Family dynamics, holiday shopping, traveling — it can take a lot out of you.

The Capricorn new moon urges you to remain calm and conserve your energy. Make “don’t sweat the small stuff” your mantra this season. If you're wrapping up a big goal, keep your eye on the finish line — and don't forget to reward yourself for all that hard work.

2. Work with crystals.

Earth sign Capricorn rules the mountains, and we always associated it with gemstones, archaeology and crystals. Our earth is the ultimate mother, and its treasures contains healing and nurturing properties. Check out the crystal info from MoonDaughter, which explains the healing properties of crystals and even offers a certification course. Or, try one of the gemstone and crystal essence sprays from ShantiKai, an amazing Hawaiian company.

3. Make it a green New Year.

Speaking of the earth, the Capricorn new moon urges you to do your part to protect it after a holiday season of excess and waste. (The U.S. alone sends $1.9 billion on holiday cards each year!) If you want to go deeper, the Capricorn new moons encourages it: read up on climate change and hydraulic fracking to develop an informed opinion on the topic. (We're fans of Good: A magazine for the global citizen for interesting perspectives.) Be proactive: buy a state park pass, make a tax-deductible donation to a conservation charity, treat yourself to a bike for urban commuting or leisurely path rides. Start a window box herb garden in your kitchen.

4. Picture yourself a year from now.

Capricorn is the strategist of our star system — the marathon runner, not the sprinter. Taking the long view is highly encouraged at this Capricorn new moon, especially if you've been sweating the small stuff. Imagine where you’d like to be this time next year. (Don’t worry, you can get back to living in the moment in a sec.) Working backward, start jotting down the simple, practical steps you’ll need to take to achieve this vision. Appoint yourself the CEO of your life and begin crafting a master plan.

5. But don't forget the past.

Although Capricorn plans for the future, this sign also honors time-tested legacies and traditions. Capricorn is the guardian of history, so find a way to honor your personal or family lineage, too. Which cherished practices have survived the generations in your clan? If you can't find anything like this in your own family tree, you could read or watch the biography of an interesting trailblazing figure — someone who literally made history. It will inspire you to ponder the legacy you might leave behind, too.

6. Start fresh with your dad (or an important man in your life).

Capricorn rules the zodiac’s tenth house of fathers, men, masculinity and authority figures. Whoa, that sounds a little foreboding, doesn’t it? Today, pay tribute to the half of the population that sports a Y chromosome. Is there a man in your life who you could personally thank? Make an effort to connect to the "masculine" or "yang" energy that lives within all of us, regardless of gender or sex. Can you find a way to appreciate your dad, even if it’s just for giving you life? If you’re not on good terms with your father, perhaps you do a small “forgiveness and release” ritual — to free both of you from any karmic pain or bitterness. New moon, new year, new focus!

7. Climb every mountain (or just ski/sled/snowboard down one).

Capricorn is the zodiac’s mountain goat, tirelessly ascending until s/he reaches the top. The physical act of climbing forces us to push beyond our resting state, something this new moon loves. We are capable of much more than we often give ourselves credit for and Capricorn’s lunar influence reminds us to streeeetch. Capricorn loves adventure sports, too. Still looking for a winter activity to help you stay active? Consider snowboarding lessons, whizzing down the black diamond (if you’re a seasoned skier), or just a nice fireside weekend at a lodge. One lift ticket, please!
