Today, the 43rd edition of the Pirelli calendar, a.k.a. fashion's sexiest calendar, was released. Behind the lens was Annie Leibovitz, one of the world's most successful and famous photographers.
Usually, the photographs depict female models in little to no clothing posing provocatively. But this year's different: the calendar showcases 12 months of (mostly) fully clothed women chosen for their achievements — a diverse group from a variety of backgrounds in arts, sports, entertainment, and philanthropy.
The full list features Amy Schumer, Serena Williams, Yoko Ono, Patti Smith, Tavi Gevinson, Fran Lebowitz, Natalia Vodianova, Kathleen Kennedy, Yao Chen, Mellody Hobson, Ava DuVernay, Agnes Gund, and Shirin Neshat.
The exceptions to the fully-dressed rule are Amy Schumer in lingerie (the joke being that she was the only one who didn't get the whole non-nude memo) and Serena Williams, who is pictured topless, back to the camera, muscles gleaming.
In a promo video for the shoot, Schumer said, "I felt I looked more beautiful than I've ever felt in my life, and I felt like it looked like me."
Beautiful, gross, strong, thin, fat, pretty, ugly, sexy, disgusting, flawless, woman. Thank you @annieleibovitz pic.twitter.com/kc0rIDvHVi

On the heels of Playboy’s decision in October to banish nudity from its pages, the Pirelli move seems add evidence to the theory that we are at a turning point in the media's objectification of the female body.
We hope to see this trend continue!
