This Model Lost Thousands Of Instagram Followers After Posting Amazingly Honest Photos
Apparently, people just want models to be pretty. That's it. No eating, drinking, exercising — nothing else — unless they look #flawless. Oh, and they definitely don't go to the bathroom. Ever.
London-based model Stina Sanders' Instagram feed is filled with photos of her on shoots and in tropical locations — mostly the staged, "perfect reality" type of images we've come to expect from models on the social media platform. Naturally, she garnered over 13,000 followers.
But after reading the story of teen model Essena O'Neill, who quit Instagram because of the dishonesty it promotes, Sanders decided to start posting vastly different photos to her account.
Instead of sharing perfectly posted bikini shots, she has documented her weekly hair removal routine, a colonic help her IBS, a trip to her psychotherapist, a chipped pedicure, and no-makeup selfies from unflattering angles.
According to Tab magazine, she wound up losing thousands of followers as a result, dipping down to 10,000.
“To see a photo of my bowel movements and not me in a bikini must have annoyed a lot of them," Sanders said. “It’s that kind of ‘I didn’t sign up for this’ attitude. Perhaps sharing my real life was too much for them. It’s interesting to see that real life is not to everyone’s taste. Perhaps Instagram is an escapism from reality. I see so many women comparing themselves to other people’s images, whether that’s the girl down the road or a Victoria Secret’s model. It’s just silly. No one is perfect."
However, after the loss of followers, people who hadn't followed her started noticing and appreciating what she was doing.
"Girls started commenting more on my images because they could relate, but men barely commented at all," she said. Now she's at 37,600 followers. Who needs those 3,000 disloyal fans?
“We all poo and have unwanted body hair," she said. "You wouldn’t be human if you didn’t!” And models — if you can believe it — are no exception.
