This Supermodel Just Made History On The Victoria's Secret Catwalk. Here's Why
When you picture a Victoria's Secret angel, you probably envision an impossibly tall, toned, thin woman covered in glitter and feathers with flowing locks somehow blowing in the nonexistent wind. Never an afro, though.
Well, Victoria's Secret seems to want to diversify its image — at least a little bit. For the first time in VS Fashion Show history, a model — namely Maria Borges — hit the catwalk with her natural hair.
The 23-year-old Angolan-born model has modeled for the lingerie company before, Essence reports, but has always worn extensions. But this time around, she really wanted to go all-natural, so she left her extensions at home.
“I told my agent I wanted to walk in the Victoria’s Secret show with my natural hair,” said Borges. “I was nervous, but I had to do it. When they said ‘yes’ I didn’t expect it, but I was so happy!”
She was so excited, she had to let her fans know on Twitter:
It's definitely a refreshing sight, and hopefully (!) it marks the beginning of a more diverse, all-inclusive image for a company known for having the exact opposite reputation.
