Meet California's First Transgender Cheerleader

18-year-old Anry Fuentes, who is transgender and identifies as a female, made headlines last week when she tried out — and earned a spot — on the cheerleading squad at her high school in Denair, California. She was determined to make the team after being cut last year.

“I was wanting to get on that team [so] I’m going to get on that team,” she told The Daily Beast. “It’s going to be like that all my life, I’m going to keep fighting for the things I like.”

As reported by The Daily Beast, Fuentes decided to move out of her family home due to issues over her gender. Luckily, Fuentes is finding the support she needs in her fellow students. Her classmates helped raise $600 so she could buy her cheerleading uniform.

Though this journey it hasn't been easy for her, Fuentes noted that she's happy to be herself, "It's much harder to hide than to come out as yourself," she told The Daily Beast.
