The coconut is a wondrous thing. How one fruit can offer the benefits of cleansing, conditioning, and even astringency is pretty amazing.

This hair wash recipe is a great solution for anyone who wants a simple alternative to the baking soda method or has found other methods to be drying or irritating. The Coconut Milk Wash has a closer pH to your scalp than a baking soda wash, and combines soothing aloe vera gel with the healing powers of coconut.

Be sure to use coconut milk specifically for this recipe. Other coconut ingredients, such as coconut water, coconut juice, or coconut cream, won’t work as well in this formula.

Coconut Milk Wash

Ingredients

  • ¼ cup coconut milk, unsweetened
  • ⅓ cup liquid Castile soap
  • ½ teaspoon jojoba oil
  • ½ teaspoon avocado oil
  • 15 drops rosemary essential oil (optional)
  • 15 drops peppermint essential oil (optional)

Preparation

Combine ingredients in a squeeze bottle and shake well.

How to use

Shake the bottle well before each use. Wet your hair and squirt 1 to 3 teaspoons of the mixture onto your scalp. Massage the mixture gently into your scalp, building up a rich lather.

Rinse well and follow with an apple cider vinegar rinse.

This mixture will last at room temperature for a few days but should be refrigerated for any longer periods. It's helpful to store the full batch in the fridge while keeping a smaller portion in the shower. Refrigerated, it will stay fresh for up to two weeks.
