In recent years, many companies — Dove and Lane Bryant, for example — have had ad campaigns featuring fuller-figured women in order to be more inclusive of all body types, to appeal to the "real" woman. But we have to remember that body image isn't just a women's issue.
Dressmann, a clothing company in Norway, wants to make sure we never forget that. In September, the company released an underwear commercial for the “perfect” man — and it's not just a bunch of David Beckham lookalikes flexing their pectorals. Instead, the ad features men of varying shapes, sizes, ages, ethnicities, levels of hairiness — you get it.
The idea is that "there is no perfect man, there are only perfect men," said Knut Vidar Nilsen, Marketing Director at Dressmann, in a statement. "Perfect," in this case, means "just the way you are."
In a behind-the-scenes video, Nilsen says, “Like many other brands, we have lost ourselves in the fashion industry’s ideals. Now we want to find our way back. Back to the majority of people. Back to reality. Back to ourselves.”
We may think we've already solved male body image issues by lovingly referring to a lack of six-pack abs as "Dad Bod," but clearly we've still got a long way to go.
