Demi Lovato Goes Nude & Makeup-Free For Vanity Fair To Spread A Powerful Message
Rather than put up a likely futile fight against the public invasion of privacy that comes with celebrity status, Demi Lovato has decided to embrace it, to narrate her own story instead of allowing other people make their own assumptions about her.
The 23-year-old singer-actress has been very open in the past about her struggle with bipolar disorder — which led her to engage in very unhealthy behaviors, including bulimia, self-harm, and substance abuse. So, in her recent Vanity Fair photo shoot, she wanted to show the world how far her relationship with herself has come.
Photographer Patrick Ecclesine just happened to be with Lovato when she suddenly decided to pose for a series of portraits — with only three rules: "no makeup, no clothes, no retouching."
“I’m about to launch an album that finally represents who I truly am," she told him. The album, coming out on October 16, is fittingly called Confident. "How do I embrace this new chapter in my life? How do I really walk the walk? What does it mean to be confident? It means letting go, being authentic, saying I don’t give a fuck and this is who I am. I want to show the side of me that’s real, that’s liberated, that’s free. What if we do a photo shoot where it’s totally raw? Super-sexy, but no makeup, no fancy lighting, no retouching, and no clothing. Let’s do it here, let’s do it now.”
Since body image has been such a major issue in Lovato's life, this type of exposure holds deep personal significance.
"I basically went from hating every single inch of my body to working on myself and trying to figure out ways to love myself and love the skin that I'm in. I learned after working very hard on my spirituality and my soul and my body, I learned that you can get to a place where you love the skin that you're in and I'm excited to share that with the world."
