Commercial hair-smoothing serums are made almost entirely of silicone and preservatives. Silicone looks good at first — it shrink-wraps hair in something like plastic, making it look smooth. Unfortunately, silicone builds up with use unless really harsh detergents are used to strip it off the hair. That buildup makes hair heavy, flat, and dull, which makes dedicated product junkies think the answer lies in more silicone!
Get off the shrink-wrapped hair bandwagon with this completely natural and hair-nourishing shine spray.
Silicone-Free Shine Spray for Hair
- 1 tablespoon water
- 1 tablespoon jojoba oil
- 1 tablespoon vegetable glycerin
- 2 teaspoons distilled white vinegar
- 10 drops vitamin E oil
- 10 drops lemon essential oil
- 6 drops orange essential oil
- 6 drops bergamot essential oil
In a 2-ounce spray bottle, combine all the ingredients. Lid tightly and shake well to combine. The shine spray will last about 3 months, though the essential oil scent may fade over time.
To use, shake the shine spray well, then spray the tips of your hair to tame split ends and frizziness. For all-over smoothing, or to protect your hair before styling, spray throughout your hair. For best results, avoid spraying your roots.
