Watch What Happens When An Acid-Attack Survivor Gives A Beauty Tutorial
The Youtube video “How To Get Red Lips” starts off like any other makeup tutorial. Reshma, an 18-year-old from Mumbai, tells viewers to start with lip balm, continue with liner, and end with lipstick. Then, she gets to the most important point of all:
“You’ll find red lipstick easily in the market, just like concentrated acid. This is the reason why, every day, a girl becomes the victim of an acid attack,” she says.
In India, there are as many as 1,000 acid attacks each year, 90% of which target women. Reshma herself was attacked with sulphuric acid by a brother-in-law last year, during her walk to school. She lost an eye, suffered horrific scaring, and needs reconstructive surgery on her mouth.
It's shocking that we live in a world where attacks like these can happen. Reshma's words underlie an important message: dangerous chemicals should never be as readily accessible, or as cheap (In India, battery acid is sold for $1.50 a liter), as makeup.
The end of her video links to a petition calling for the end the open sale of acid in India. Its gathered 40,000 names in just three days. Do some good today, and click here to add your support.
