These Are The 30 Friendliest Cities In The World

What defines a city? The food? The economy? The schools? All of those things are important, sure, but none more so than the people.

Every year, Travel + Leisure asks its readers to rank their favorite cities around the globe in their World’s Best Awards survey. The cities considered friendliest are more accessible to travelers and have an overall feeling of warmth.

As a New Yorker, friendliness is a rarity. After spending most of the year getting shoved out of subway cars, I'm definitely looking for a place that will welcome me with open arms when I travel.

Galway, Ireland, it seems, is my best bet — where there's service not only with a smile but with a song and a beer, too. I love you, New York, but sometimes I need to talk to people who won't ignore me when I ask for directions.

Here are the 30 friendliest cities in the world:

  1. Galway, Ireland
  2. Charleston, South Carolina
  3. Dublin, Ireland
  4. Cork, Ireland
  5. Siem Reap, Cambodia
